Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — 1939

Detailed Solution

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was originally raised on 27 July 1939 as the Crown Representative's Police.

Origin:

  • It was raised at Neemuch in Madhya Pradesh, which is regarded as its birthplace.
  • It was formed to help the princely states maintain law and order, as part of the British Crown Representative's responsibilities.
  • Political unrest in the princely states and the growing national movement led to its creation.

Renaming after independence:

  • After independence, it was renamed the Central Reserve Police Force by an Act of Parliament, the CRPF Act, 1949.
  • Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, as Home Minister, played a role in giving the force a new national role.

Role of the CRPF:

  • It is the largest Central Armed Police Force in India.
  • It helps state governments maintain law and order and public peace.
  • It is deployed for counter-insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir and the North-East.
  • It plays the main role in operations against Left-wing extremism (Naxalism).
  • It provides security during elections.
  • It helps in disaster relief.

Special units of the CRPF:

  • Rapid Action Force (RAF): deals with riots and communal violence.
  • CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action): specialises in jungle warfare against Naxalites.
  • Mahila battalions: units made up entirely of women personnel.
  • Special Duty Group: once provided security to VVIPs.

Famous incident:

On 21 October 1959, a CRPF patrol was ambushed by Chinese troops at Hot Springs in Ladakh. 21 October is observed as Police Commemoration Day.

Valour Day:

9 April is observed as CRPF Valour Day, in memory of the Battle of Sardar Post in Gujarat in 1965.

Control:

  • It is under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • Its headquarters is in New Delhi.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗1949 is when it was renamed the CRPF.
  • ✗1955 and 1965 do not match.

Quick tip

Remember: CRPF = raised on 27 July 1939 as the Crown Representative's Police at Neemuch; renamed CRPF in 1949.
