'Jadopatia' is a form of painting found in which state?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Jharkhand

Detailed Solution

Jadopatia painting is a traditional scroll painting of the Santhal tribe of Jharkhand, practised mainly in the Santhal Parganas region (Dumka and nearby districts), and also in parts of West Bengal and Bihar. The name comes from "jado" (painter) and "patia" (a cloth or paper scroll). The painters themselves are called "Jadopatias" or "Jadupatuas".

Features of Jadopatia painting:

The paintings are made on long scrolls made by stitching together pieces of paper or cloth, about 15-20 feet long. Each scroll has a series of panels, usually about 4-16.

They are used for storytelling. The Jadopatia painter travels from village to village, unrolling the scroll panel by panel and singing the story shown in the pictures.

The stories are taken from Santhal mythology, such as the creation of the world by Marang Buru and the origin of the Santhal people; from the Ramayana and Mahabharata; and from social life.

A special type of painting is made about the afterlife. When a person dies, the painter makes a painting of the dead person without eyes and later "paints in" the eyes, in return for a gift, believing it helps the soul find peace (a "chakshudaan" ritual).

Natural colours from leaves, flowers, stones and soil are used, with simple, bold figures.

Jadopatia painting is regarded as one of the oldest folk painting traditions of eastern India, but it is declining.

Jharkhand also has Paitkar (Amadubi) scroll paintings and Sohrai-Khovar wall paintings (GI 2020).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Odisha has Pattachitra and Saura paintings.
  • ✗Rajasthan has Phad paintings (also scrolls used in storytelling, about Pabuji and Devnarayan).
  • ✗Andhra Pradesh has Kalamkari and Cheriyal scrolls (Cheriyal is in Telangana).

Quick tip

Remember: Jadopatia = Santhal scroll paintings of Jharkhand (Santhal Parganas), sung by travelling painters; Phad = Rajasthani scroll (Pabuji); Paitkar = Amadubi.

Paintings, Crafts, Dress & Tribes — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Paintings, Crafts, Dress & Tribes, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's traditional painting styles (such as Madhubani, Warli, Pattachitra, Kalamkari, Gond and Tanjore), handicrafts and textiles, traditional dresses, and the major tribes of each state and their customs. It also includes Geographical Indication (GI) tags given to crafts and products. Questions usually ask which state a painting or craft belongs to, which tribe lives in a region, or what a traditional dress is called. Warli belongs to Maharashtra, Madhubani to Bihar, Pattachitra to Odisha and West Bengal, and Gond art to Madhya Pradesh. Grouping tribes by state, and noting the largest tribe of key states (such as the Bhils and the Santhals), helps with elimination.
