Pochampally Ikat sarees, famous for their geometric patterns, belong to which state?
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option B — Telangana
Detailed Solution
Pochampally Ikat is a traditional handloom textile woven in Bhoodan Pochampally and surrounding villages in the Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district of Telangana, about 40 km from Hyderabad.
About Pochampally Ikat:
"Ikat" is a tie-and-dye technique in which the yarns (warp, weft or both) are tied in sections and dyed before weaving. When the yarns are woven, the dyed sections create a pattern.
Pochampally Ikat is famous for its bold geometric designs, such as diamonds, squares and zigzags, and its bright colours.
It is woven in silk and cotton, and is used for sarees, dress materials and home furnishings.
It received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2004-05, one of the first Indian textiles to receive it.
Pochampally is called the "Silk City of India" by some.
In 2021, the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) selected Pochampally as one of the "Best Tourism Villages" in the world.
Air India cabin crew once wore sarees made of Pochampally silk.
Why "Bhoodan" Pochampally:
On 18 April 1951, the Bhoodan ("land gift") Movement was started here by Acharya Vinoba Bhave, when the landlord Vedire Ramachandra Reddy donated 100 acres of land for landless Dalit families. Since then, the village has been called "Bhoodan Pochampally".
Other ikat traditions of India:
- Patola: Patan, Gujarat; a "double ikat" in which both the warp and weft are tie-dyed, making it very complex.
- Sambalpuri (Bandha): Odisha.
- Puttapaka Telia Rumal: Telangana.
Other famous handlooms of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh:
- Gadwal sarees (Telangana).
- Narayanpet sarees (Telangana).
- Venkatagiri and Uppada sarees (Andhra Pradesh).
- Mangalagiri sarees (Andhra Pradesh).
Why not the other options?
- ✗Odisha is famous for Sambalpuri ikat.
- ✗Gujarat is famous for Patola double ikat.
- ✗Andhra Pradesh is famous for Venkatagiri and Uppada sarees.
Quick tip
Remember: Pochampally Ikat = Telangana (Yadadri Bhuvanagiri; GI tag 2004-05; UNWTO Best Tourism Village 2021; Bhoodan began here 18 April 1951); Patola = Gujarat double ikat; Sambalpuri = Odisha.

This question tests your understanding of Paintings, Crafts, Dress & Tribes, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's traditional painting styles (such as Madhubani, Warli, Pattachitra, Kalamkari, Gond and Tanjore), handicrafts and textiles, traditional dresses, and the major tribes of each state and their customs. It also includes Geographical Indication (GI) tags given to crafts and products. Questions usually ask which state a painting or craft belongs to, which tribe lives in a region, or what a traditional dress is called. Warli belongs to Maharashtra, Madhubani to Bihar, Pattachitra to Odisha and West Bengal, and Gond art to Madhya Pradesh. Grouping tribes by state, and noting the largest tribe of key states (such as the Bhils and the Santhals), helps with elimination.
