'Tawlhlohpuan', a traditional handwoven fabric, is from which state?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Mizoram

Detailed Solution

"Tawlhlohpuan" is a traditional, densely woven handloom fabric of Mizoram.

About Tawlhlohpuan:

It is woven by hand by Mizo women on traditional looms.

The name comes from Mizo words: "tawlh" (to slip back), "loh" (not) and "puan" (cloth). It means "cloth that does not slip back" or "that holds firm", symbolising courage and steadfastness.

It is a heavy, compact fabric with fine, intricate designs, made with warp and weft yarns.

Traditionally, it was worn by brave warriors and later became a symbol of honour and status.

It is used during important ceremonies and occasions.

It received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2023, along with another Mizo textile, "Mizo Puanchei".

Other textiles of Mizoram:

Puanchei: a colourful, richly decorated fabric, regarded as the most important costume of Mizo women; it is worn during festivals such as Chapchar Kut and at weddings. It also has a GI tag.

Ngotekherh: a traditional woven cloth.

Hmaram: a decorated skirt.

Puan is the general Mizo word for a wrap-around cloth.

About Mizoram's culture:

  • Its main festivals are Chapchar Kut (spring), Mim Kut and Pawl Kut (harvest festivals).
  • Its famous dance is the "Cheraw" (bamboo dance).
  • Weaving is a traditional skill of Mizo women, and handlooms are an important source of income.

Textiles of other north-eastern states:

  • Manipur: "Moirang Phee", "Shaphee Lanphee" and "Wangkhei Phee" (GI tags).
  • Nagaland: "Naga shawls" (GI tag), with patterns that indicate status and tribe.
  • Tripura: "Risa" (a cloth worn by women; also given as a symbol of respect).
  • Assam: Muga silk, Eri silk and "Gamosa".
  • Arunachal Pradesh: "Gale" (Galo women's wrap-around skirt).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Manipur is known for Moirang Phee and Shaphee Lanphee.
  • ✗Nagaland is known for Naga shawls.
  • ✗Tripura is known for the Risa.

Quick tip

Remember: Tawlhlohpuan and Puanchei = Mizoram textiles (GI tags 2023); Naga shawl = Nagaland; Moirang Phee = Manipur; Risa = Tripura; Cheraw = Mizoram bamboo dance.

Paintings, Crafts, Dress & Tribes — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Paintings, Crafts, Dress & Tribes, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's traditional painting styles (such as Madhubani, Warli, Pattachitra, Kalamkari, Gond and Tanjore), handicrafts and textiles, traditional dresses, and the major tribes of each state and their customs. It also includes Geographical Indication (GI) tags given to crafts and products. Questions usually ask which state a painting or craft belongs to, which tribe lives in a region, or what a traditional dress is called. Warli belongs to Maharashtra, Madhubani to Bihar, Pattachitra to Odisha and West Bengal, and Gond art to Madhya Pradesh. Grouping tribes by state, and noting the largest tribe of key states (such as the Bhils and the Santhals), helps with elimination. Practise the paintings, crafts and tribes questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT.
