Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Humayun

Detailed Solution

The Persian painter Abdus Samad, along with Mir Sayyid Ali, came to India at the invitation of the Mughal emperor Humayun, and helped found the Mughal school of painting.

How they met Humayun:

  • During his exile, Humayun spent time at the court of the Safavid ruler Shah Tahmasp in Persia (Iran), around 1544.
  • There, he saw the fine paintings of the Persian court, and met the painters Mir Sayyid Ali and Abdus Samad.
  • He invited them to join his service.
  • They joined him at Kabul around 1549-50, and came with him to India when he regained his throne in 1555.

About Abdus Samad:

  • He was born in Shiraz, Persia, and was a skilled painter and calligrapher.
  • Humayun gave him the title "Shirin Qalam" ("Sweet Pen").
  • He taught painting to the young Akbar and to Humayun himself.
  • Under Akbar, he became the head of the imperial painting workshop (karkhana), and later held important administrative posts, such as master of the mint at Fatehpur Sikri and diwan of Multan.
  • His son, Muhammad Sharif, also became a painter and a close friend of Jahangir.

The beginning of Mughal painting:

  • Mir Sayyid Ali and Abdus Samad supervised the work on the "Hamzanama" (the Dastan-i-Amir Hamza), a huge illustrated manuscript of the adventures of Amir Hamza.
  • It had about 1,400 large paintings on cloth, and took about 15 years to complete (about 1562-1577), under Akbar.
  • Indian painters trained in the workshop blended Persian styles with Indian traditions, creating the distinctive Mughal style.

Features of Mughal painting:

  • Fine brushwork, bright colours, and realistic portraits.
  • Scenes of court life, battles, hunting, and nature.
  • Illustrations of books and histories.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Babur did not bring these painters.
  • ✗Akbar and Jahangir patronised Mughal painting later.

Quick tip

Remember: Abdus Samad ("Shirin Qalam") and Mir Sayyid Ali = Persian painters invited by Humayun (met in Persia); supervised the Hamzanama; founders of the Mughal school.

Paintings, Crafts, Dress & Tribes — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Paintings, Crafts, Dress & Tribes, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's traditional painting styles (such as Madhubani, Warli, Pattachitra, Kalamkari, Gond and Tanjore), handicrafts and textiles, traditional dresses, and the major tribes of each state and their customs. It also includes Geographical Indication (GI) tags given to crafts and products. Questions usually ask which state a painting or craft belongs to, which tribe lives in a region, or what a traditional dress is called. Warli belongs to Maharashtra, Madhubani to Bihar, Pattachitra to Odisha and West Bengal, and Gond art to Madhya Pradesh. Grouping tribes by state, and noting the largest tribe of key states (such as the Bhils and the Santhals), helps with elimination. Practise the paintings, crafts and tribes questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
