Answer: Option A — Leonardo da Vinci
Detailed Solution
"The Last Supper" is a mural painting made by the Italian Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci between about 1495 and 1498. It is painted on a wall of the refectory (dining hall) of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. It was commissioned by Leonardo's patron, Ludovico Sforza, the Duke of Milan.
The painting shows the moment from the Bible when Jesus Christ, at his last meal with his twelve apostles before his crucifixion, announces that one of them will betray him. Leonardo captured the different reactions of the apostles, who are arranged in four groups of three, with Jesus in the centre. Judas, the betrayer, is shown leaning back into shadow, clutching a small bag (of silver). The lines of the room's perspective all lead the eye to the head of Jesus.
Leonardo did not use the traditional fresco technique (painting on wet plaster). Instead, he experimented by painting with tempera and oil on dry plaster, so that he could work slowly and make changes. Unfortunately, this caused the paint to start flaking within a few decades. The painting has been restored several times; a major restoration was completed in 1999. The church and the convent, with the painting, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1980).
About Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519):
- He was a painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, scientist and inventor, the model of a "Renaissance man".
- His other famous works include the "Mona Lisa" (in the Louvre, Paris) and the drawing "Vitruvian Man".
Why not the other options?
- ✗Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and sculpted "David" and the "Pieta".
- ✗Raphael painted "The School of Athens".
- ✗Vincent van Gogh, a 19th-century Dutch painter, painted "The Starry Night" and "Sunflowers".
Quick tip
Remember: "The Last Supper" and "Mona Lisa" = Leonardo da Vinci; Sistine Chapel ceiling = Michelangelo; "The School of Athens" = Raphael; "The Starry Night" = van Gogh.

Paintings, Crafts, Dress & Tribes — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Paintings, Crafts, Dress & Tribes, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's traditional painting styles (such as Madhubani, Warli, Pattachitra, Kalamkari, Gond and Tanjore), handicrafts and textiles, traditional dresses, and the major tribes of each state and their customs. It also includes Geographical Indication (GI) tags given to crafts and products. Questions usually ask which state a painting or craft belongs to, which tribe lives in a region, or what a traditional dress is called. Warli belongs to Maharashtra, Madhubani to Bihar, Pattachitra to Odisha and West Bengal, and Gond art to Madhya Pradesh. Grouping tribes by state, and noting the largest tribe of key states (such as the Bhils and the Santhals), helps with elimination.
