Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Sri Lanka

Detailed Solution

Both are famous sites of ancient painting in Sri Lanka, and both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Sigiriya (Lion Rock):

  • It is a massive rock fortress rising about 180-200 metres above the surrounding plain in the Matale district of central Sri Lanka.
  • It was built by King Kashyapa I (Kasyapa) in the 5th century CE (about 477-495 CE) as his royal palace and capital.
  • The entrance was through a huge gateway shaped like a lion, of which only the giant stone paws remain.

On the rock face are the famous frescoes of the "Sigiriya maidens" (celestial nymphs or court ladies), painted with flowing lines and bright colours. They are often compared with the paintings at Ajanta in India.

It also has the "Mirror Wall", which was once polished so well that the king could see himself, and on which ancient visitors wrote verses (graffiti).

Sigiriya was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.

Dambulla Cave Temple (Golden Temple of Dambulla):

  • It is a group of five cave shrines in central Sri Lanka, used by Buddhist monks since the 1st century BCE.
  • The caves contain over 150 statues of the Buddha and about 2,100 square metres of painted walls and ceilings showing the life of the Buddha.
  • It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.

In India, the most famous ancient paintings are at Ajanta (Maharashtra), Bagh (Madhya Pradesh), Badami (Karnataka) and Sittanavasal (Tamil Nadu). The Ajanta paintings, made from about the 2nd century BCE to the 5th century CE, show Jataka tales.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗India has the Ajanta and Bagh cave paintings.
  • ✗Nepal is known for Buddhist thangka and Newar paintings.
  • ✗Myanmar is known for the temple murals of Bagan.

Quick tip

Remember: Sigiriya (Lion Rock, King Kashyapa I, 5th century, frescoes of maidens, Mirror Wall) and Dambulla (cave temple) = Sri Lanka; Ajanta = India.

Paintings, Crafts, Dress & Tribes — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Paintings, Crafts, Dress & Tribes, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's traditional painting styles (such as Madhubani, Warli, Pattachitra, Kalamkari, Gond and Tanjore), handicrafts and textiles, traditional dresses, and the major tribes of each state and their customs. It also includes Geographical Indication (GI) tags given to crafts and products. Questions usually ask which state a painting or craft belongs to, which tribe lives in a region, or what a traditional dress is called. Warli belongs to Maharashtra, Madhubani to Bihar, Pattachitra to Odisha and West Bengal, and Gond art to Madhya Pradesh. Grouping tribes by state, and noting the largest tribe of key states (such as the Bhils and the Santhals), helps with elimination. Practise the paintings, crafts and tribes questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
