Answer: Option B — Bihar
Detailed Solution
Sujini (Sujani) is a traditional embroidery and quilting craft of Bihar. It is practised mainly by women in Muzaffarpur district, especially in Bhusura village, and in nearby areas of north Bihar such as Madhubani and Darbhanga. "Sujini Embroidery Works of Bihar" received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2006.
Features of Sujini:
Traditionally, Sujini quilts were made by stitching together layers of old, soft cotton saris and dhotis to make a light quilt or wrap for newborn babies. The quilt was meant to wrap a baby in comfort and in the blessings of the family.
The embroidery uses a simple running stitch to fill the cloth and outline the designs, together with chain stitches for the outlines.
The motifs show scenes from village life, women's lives, nature, birds, animals, fish, gods and goddesses, and symbols of fertility and prosperity.
The style of the designs is similar to that of Madhubani painting, which comes from the same region.
In the 1980s, development organisations and government agencies helped women of Bhusura form self-help groups to sell Sujini work. Today, it is used on bedcovers, cushion covers, wall hangings, saris and dupattas. It now often addresses social themes such as girls' education, dowry and women's rights.
Sujini is similar to the Kantha embroidery of Bengal, which also uses old saris and running stitches.
Other crafts of Bihar include Madhubani painting, Sikki grass craft, Bhagalpur tussar silk, Manjusha art (Bhagalpur), Tikuli art (Patna) and Applique (Khatwa) work.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Gujarat is known for Kutch embroidery and Patola.
- ✗Punjab is known for Phulkari.
- ✗Karnataka is known for Kasuti embroidery.
Quick tip
Remember: Sujini = Bihar (Bhusura, Muzaffarpur), running-stitch quilts from old saris, GI 2006; Kantha = Bengal; Kasuti = Karnataka.

Paintings, Crafts, Dress & Tribes — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Paintings, Crafts, Dress & Tribes, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's traditional painting styles (such as Madhubani, Warli, Pattachitra, Kalamkari, Gond and Tanjore), handicrafts and textiles, traditional dresses, and the major tribes of each state and their customs. It also includes Geographical Indication (GI) tags given to crafts and products. Questions usually ask which state a painting or craft belongs to, which tribe lives in a region, or what a traditional dress is called. Warli belongs to Maharashtra, Madhubani to Bihar, Pattachitra to Odisha and West Bengal, and Gond art to Madhya Pradesh. Grouping tribes by state, and noting the largest tribe of key states (such as the Bhils and the Santhals), helps with elimination. Practise the paintings, crafts and tribes questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
