Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), a central public sector steel company, is popularly referred to as:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Vizag Steel

Detailed Solution

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) is the corporate entity of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, popularly called "Vizag Steel", located at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. It works under the Ministry of Steel.

The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant has a strong place in the history of Andhra Pradesh. It was set up after a mass movement in the 1960s with the slogan "Visakha Ukku, Andhrula Hakku" ("Vizag Steel is the right of the Andhras"), in which several people lost their lives in police firing in 1966. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi laid its foundation stone in 1971. RINL was incorporated in 1982, and the plant was dedicated to the nation in 1992.

It is India's first shore-based (coastal) integrated steel plant. Its location near the sea allows it to import coking coal easily through Visakhapatnam Port and export steel. It gets iron ore mainly from the Bailadila mines in Chhattisgarh. RINL received Navratna status in 2010. The plant uses modern technology, and its products, such as wire rods, structurals and special bars, are known for their quality. In recent years, RINL faced financial difficulties; in 2021 the government announced plans for its strategic disinvestment, which faced strong opposition, and in January 2025 the Centre approved a revival package of about ₹11,440 crore.

Other major steel plants in the public sector are run by the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a Maharatna, formed in 1973:

Bhilai (Chhattisgarh): set up with Soviet help (1959).

Rourkela (Odisha): set up with West German help.

Durgapur (West Bengal): set up with British help.

Bokaro (Jharkhand): set up with Soviet help.

IISCO Steel Plant, Burnpur (West Bengal).

Tata Steel, at Jamshedpur (founded 1907), is India's oldest major private steel company. India is the world's second-largest producer of crude steel, after China.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Bhilai Steel is a SAIL plant in Chhattisgarh.
  • ✗Tata Steel is a private company at Jamshedpur.
  • ✗Bokaro Steel is a SAIL plant in Jharkhand.

Quick tip

Remember: RINL = Vizag Steel (Andhra Pradesh), first shore-based integrated steel plant, Navratna (2010); SAIL plants = Bhilai, Rourkela, Durgapur, Bokaro and Burnpur; Tata Steel = 1907.
