Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option C — Nagpur, Maharashtra
Detailed Solution
Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Limited (MECL), earlier called Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited, is a public sector company that carries out detailed exploration of minerals in India. It was set up on 21 October 1972. Its headquarters is in Nagpur, Maharashtra, and it works under the Ministry of Mines.
The main work of MECL is detailed exploration, which comes after the initial survey (reconnaissance) of an area. It involves drilling, mining exploratory pits and tunnels, and sampling, to find out the exact quantity, quality and economic value of a mineral deposit. This information helps the government and companies decide whether a deposit can be profitably mined. MECL has explored deposits of coal, lignite, iron ore, copper, lead, zinc, gold, bauxite, manganese and many other minerals. Under the National Mineral Exploration Policy and the National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET), MECL is also exploring critical minerals, such as lithium, cobalt and rare earth elements, which are important for electric vehicles and renewable energy. India launched the National Critical Mineral Mission in 2025.
Other important bodies in the mining sector:
- Geological Survey of India (GSI): founded in 1851, headquarters Kolkata; it is one of the oldest such organisations in the world and carries out geological mapping and regional exploration.
- Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM): set up in 1948, headquarters Nagpur; it regulates mining and promotes conservation of minerals, except coal, petroleum and atomic minerals.
- National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC): headquarters Hyderabad; India's largest iron ore producer, operating the Bailadila and Donimalai mines.
- Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD): headquarters Hyderabad.
- Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI): headquarters Ranchi, for coal.
- Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad: India's premier mining education institution.
- Nagpur is also called the "Orange City" and lies at the geographical centre of India (the Zero Mile Stone).
Why not the other options?
- ✗Kolkata hosts the Geological Survey of India and Coal India.
- ✗Hyderabad hosts NMDC and the AMD.
- ✗Dhanbad hosts IIT (ISM).
Quick tip
Remember: MECL = Nagpur (1972, detailed mineral exploration); IBM = Nagpur; GSI = Kolkata (1851); NMDC = Hyderabad (iron ore, Bailadila); CMPDI = Ranchi.
