The Khetri Copper Complex (KCC) of Hindustan Copper Limited is located in:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Rajasthan

Detailed Solution

The Khetri Copper Complex (KCC) is located at Khetri Nagar in the Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan, in the northern Aravalli hills. It is one of the main units of Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL), a Mini Ratna public sector company under the Ministry of Mines.

Copper mining in the Khetri area is very old; it is believed that copper was mined there even in ancient times, and the area is associated with the Ganeshwar-Jodhpura culture, which supplied copper to Harappan settlements. The modern Khetri Copper Complex was set up in the 1960s and was handed over to HCL when it was incorporated on 9 November 1967. The complex has underground mines (Khetri and Kolihan), a concentrator plant and, in the past, a smelter and refinery.

Hindustan Copper Limited is India's only vertically integrated copper producer, carrying out mining, beneficiation (concentration), smelting, refining and the making of copper products. Its headquarters is in Kolkata. Its main units are:

Khetri Copper Complex (KCC), Rajasthan.

Malanjkhand Copper Project (MCP), in the Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh, India's largest open-cast copper mine.

Indian Copper Complex (ICC), at Ghatsila in the East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.

Taloja Copper Project (TCP), in Maharashtra, which makes continuous cast copper wire rods.

Gujarat Copper Project, at Jhagadia.

Copper is an excellent conductor of electricity and heat, so it is used in electrical wires, cables, motors, transformers and electronics. It is also used in making alloys such as brass (copper and zinc) and bronze (copper and tin). India produces only a small part of the copper it uses and imports the rest. Private companies, such as Hindalco (Birla Copper, Dahej) and Vedanta (Sterlite Copper, whose Thoothukudi smelter was closed in 2018), also refine copper.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Jharkhand has the Indian Copper Complex at Ghatsila.
  • ✗Madhya Pradesh has the Malanjkhand copper mine in Balaghat, the largest.
  • ✗Odisha is a major producer of bauxite, iron ore and chromite, not copper.

Quick tip

Remember: Hindustan Copper = Khetri (Rajasthan), Malanjkhand (Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh, largest mine), Ghatsila (Jharkhand), Taloja (Maharashtra); headquarters Kolkata; incorporated 1967.
