Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Germany

Detailed Solution

Bagha Jatin (Jatindranath Mukherjee), a leading revolutionary of Bengal, planned an armed insurrection against the British during the First World War with the help of Germany; this plan is known as the "German Plot" or the "Hindu-German Conspiracy".

About the plan:

  • During the war, Germany was Britain's enemy, and it was willing to help Indian revolutionaries.
  • The Berlin Committee (Indian Independence Committee), formed by Indian revolutionaries in Germany, arranged for German arms and money to be sent to India.
  • Ships carrying arms (such as the "Maverick") were to reach the coast of Bengal and Odisha.
  • Bagha Jatin and his comrades planned to receive the arms and start an uprising, with the help of Indian soldiers.

The plan failed:

  • British intelligence learnt about the plan, and the arms shipments never reached India.
  • The British police tracked down Bagha Jatin and his companions in the Balasore district of Odisha.
  • In September 1915, Bagha Jatin and four companions fought a gun battle with the police at Chashakhand (near Balasore), on the banks of the Burha Balang river.
  • Bagha Jatin was seriously wounded and died in hospital at Balasore on 10 September 1915.

About Bagha Jatin:

  • He was born on 7 December 1879 in Kushtia (now in Bangladesh).
  • He got the name "Bagha" ("tiger") because he is said to have killed a tiger with a dagger.
  • He was a leader of the Bengal revolutionary movement.
  • He is remembered for his words "Amra morbo, jagat jagbe" ("We shall die to awaken the nation").

Other parts of the plan:

  • The Ghadar Party in America was also part of the wider conspiracy.
  • The Indian revolutionaries in Berlin included Virendranath Chattopadhyaya and Bhupendranath Datta.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Japan helped Subhas Chandra Bose in the Second World War; Russia and France were Britain's allies in the First World War.
