Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — 1906

Detailed Solution

The revolutionary group "Yugantar" (Jugantar) was formed in Bengal in 1906, around the Bengali weekly newspaper "Yugantar", which was started in the same year.

About Yugantar:

  • It grew out of the Anushilan Samiti of Calcutta, the early revolutionary society of Bengal.
  • It was led by Barindra Kumar Ghosh (the younger brother of Sri Aurobindo), Bhupendranath Datta and others.
  • The weekly "Yugantar" openly preached armed revolution against British rule, and became very popular among young people.
  • The British repeatedly prosecuted the paper for sedition; Bhupendranath Datta was imprisoned, and the paper was finally closed in 1908.

Activities:

  • The Yugantar group set up a secret centre at the Maniktala garden house in Calcutta, where they made bombs and trained young revolutionaries.
  • Its members attempted to kill British officials, including judges and magistrates, considered to be oppressive.
  • In 1908, the police raided the Maniktala centre and arrested many members; this led to a famous conspiracy case.

Later activities:

During the First World War, Yugantar leaders planned an armed uprising, which was crushed by the police.

Significance:

  • Yugantar was one of the two major revolutionary organisations of Bengal, along with the Anushilan Samiti of Dacca.
  • Its members later took part in many revolutionary activities, and some joined the Congress and other movements.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗1885 was the year of the founding of the Congress.
  • ✗1919 and 1930 were not the year Yugantar was formed.

Quick tip

Remember: Yugantar (Jugantar) = 1906, Bengal (Barindra Kumar Ghosh, Bhupendranath Datta; Maniktala bomb factory).
