Detailed Solution
The "Abhinav Bharat Society" was also known as the "Young India Society"; "Abhinav Bharat" means "New India" or "Young India".
About the Abhinav Bharat Society:
- It was founded in 1904 by Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and his elder brother Ganesh Damodar Savarkar, by reorganising an earlier secret society of Nashik.
- It was named after Giuseppe Mazzini's "Young Italy", a revolutionary society of 19th-century Italy, which inspired Savarkar.
- It was a secret revolutionary society that aimed to overthrow British rule by force.
- It had branches in many parts of Maharashtra and in other regions, and later in London.
- Its members took an oath of secrecy and trained in the use of arms.
Activities:
Members smuggled arms and bomb manuals from Europe into India.
In December 1909, Anant Laxman Kanhere, a young member, shot dead A. M. T. Jackson, the Collector of Nashik, at a theatre where a Marathi play was being staged.
This led to the Nashik Conspiracy Case, in which many members, including Ganesh Savarkar, were arrested and sentenced.
Kanhere and two others were hanged in 1910.
Ganesh Savarkar was sentenced to transportation for life to the Andamans.
- D. Savarkar:
He was in London when the Nashik incident took place.
He was arrested in London in 1910 and sent to India for trial; he famously tried to escape by jumping from the ship at Marseilles, France, but was recaptured.
He was sentenced to two terms of transportation for life (50 years).
End of the society:
The Abhinav Bharat Society was formally dissolved in 1952.
Why not the other options?
- ✗India House, the Indian Home Rule Society and Young Bengal were other organisations.
