Answer: Option A — San Francisco (USA)

Detailed Solution

The "Yugantar Ashram", the headquarters of the Ghadar Party, was established at 436 Hill Street (later Wood Street), San Francisco, in the United States.

About the Yugantar Ashram:

  • It was the office, press and meeting place of the Ghadar Party.
  • The party's newspaper "Ghadar" (meaning "revolt" or "mutiny") was printed here, in Urdu, Punjabi (Gurmukhi), Hindi and other languages.
  • The newspaper was sent to Indians in America, Canada, East Asia and India, to spread revolutionary ideas.
  • The name "Yugantar" ("new age") was inspired by the Bengali revolutionary journal of the same name.

About the Ghadar Party:

  • It was formed by Indian immigrants in the United States and Canada, most of whom were Punjabi Sikh farmers and workers, as well as students.
  • It aimed to overthrow British rule in India through an armed revolution.
  • Its leaders included Lala Har Dayal and others.

The Ghadar revolt (1915):

  • When the First World War broke out in 1914, the Ghadarites believed that it was the right time to start a revolution in India.
  • Thousands of Ghadarites returned to India to start an uprising among Indian soldiers.
  • The plan for a revolt in February 1915 failed because of informers, and many Ghadarites were arrested.
  • Many were tried in the Lahore Conspiracy Cases; many were hanged, and many were imprisoned in the Andaman Islands.

Today:

The building now houses the Ghadar Memorial Hall, maintained by the Indian government.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Vancouver, Berlin and London were other centres of Indian activity abroad, but the Yugantar Ashram was in San Francisco.

Quick tip

Remember: Yugantar Ashram = headquarters of the Ghadar Party, San Francisco (newspaper "Ghadar"); Ghadar revolt plan of February 1915 failed; Lahore Conspiracy Cases.
