'Penalty corner' is a term associated with which sport?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Hockey

Detailed Solution

A penalty corner (also called a short corner) is a set-piece in field hockey, awarded to the attacking team for certain fouls committed by the defending team. It is one of the most important scoring opportunities in hockey.

A penalty corner is awarded when:

  • A defender commits an intentional foul inside the 23-metre area (but outside the shooting circle).
  • A defender commits an unintentional foul inside the shooting circle (the "D") that does not prevent a probable goal.
  • A defender deliberately plays the ball over the back line.

How a penalty corner is taken:

An attacker pushes or hits the ball from a mark on the back line, at least 10 metres from the nearest goalpost (the "injection").

Other attackers wait outside the shooting circle. One of them "stops" the ball, and another shoots, often with a powerful "drag-flick".

Up to five defenders, including the goalkeeper, stand behind the back line and rush out once the ball is played.

For a direct hit shot, the ball must not be higher than the backboard (460 mm) when crossing the goal line.

India has produced famous drag-flickers, such as Sandeep Singh, Rupinder Pal Singh and Harmanpreet Singh, who captained the men's team to bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

A "penalty stroke" is a different award in hockey, a one-on-one shot from a spot 6.4 metres in front of the goal, awarded for a foul that prevents a probable goal.

Other hockey terms include "bully", "dribble", "short corner", "striking circle", "push-in" and "scoop". Hockey's governing body is the International Hockey Federation (FIH), headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland. India has won eight Olympic gold medals in hockey, the most by any country, including six in a row from 1928 to 1956. Major Dhyan Chand is called the "Wizard of Hockey", and his birthday, 29 August, is celebrated as National Sports Day.

Football has "penalty kick" and "corner kick", but not "penalty corner".

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Football has penalty kicks and corner kicks.
  • ✗Basketball has terms such as "dunk" and "free throw".
  • ✗Volleyball has terms such as "spike" and "smash".

Quick tip

Remember: Penalty corner, drag-flick, bully and striking circle = hockey; India = 8 Olympic hockey golds; Dhyan Chand = Wizard of Hockey (National Sports Day, 29 August).
