The Barabati Stadium is located in which state?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Odisha

Detailed Solution

The Barabati Stadium is a cricket stadium located in Cuttack, Odisha, on the banks of the Mahanadi river. It is named after the nearby Barabati Fort, a 14th-century fort built by the Ganga dynasty, whose ruins and moat still exist. The stadium is managed by the Odisha Cricket Association and has a seating capacity of about 45,000.

The stadium hosted its first One Day International (ODI) in 1982, between India and England, and its first Test match in 1987, between India and Sri Lanka. It has also hosted World Cup matches (in 1987 and 1996), Twenty20 internationals, and matches of the Ranji Trophy. It has also been used for football and athletics.

Odisha has become an important centre of Indian sport, especially hockey:

  • The Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar hosted the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup in 2018, and co-hosted the 2023 Hockey World Cup.
  • The Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela, opened in 2023, is India's largest hockey stadium, with a capacity of about 20,000; it co-hosted the 2023 Hockey World Cup.
  • The Odisha government has sponsored the Indian men's and women's hockey teams since 2018.
  • Bhubaneswar also hosted the Asian Athletics Championships in 2017.

Other famous stadiums in India:

  • Narendra Modi Stadium (Motera), Ahmedabad: the world's largest cricket stadium (capacity about 1,32,000).
  • Eden Gardens, Kolkata: one of the oldest and most famous cricket grounds (1864).
  • Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai: hosted the 2011 World Cup final.
  • Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

M.A. Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk), Chennai.

Salt Lake Stadium (Yuva Bharati Krirangan), Kolkata: a large football stadium.

Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi: hosted the 1982 Asian Games and the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗West Bengal has Eden Gardens and the Salt Lake Stadium.
  • ✗Assam has the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.
  • ✗Jharkhand has the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi.

Quick tip

Remember: Barabati Stadium = Cuttack (Odisha); Kalinga Stadium = Bhubaneswar; Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium = Rourkela (largest hockey stadium); Narendra Modi Stadium = Ahmedabad (largest cricket stadium).
