Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — 5 years

Detailed Solution

Under Article 67, the Vice-President holds office for a term of five years from the date on which he enters upon his office.

Other provisions of Article 67:

  • He can resign at any time by writing to the President.
  • He can be removed by a resolution of the Rajya Sabha passed by an effective majority (a majority of all the then members) and agreed to by the Lok Sabha by a simple majority.
  • At least 14 days' notice must be given before moving such a resolution.
  • He continues in office even after his term expires until his successor takes charge.

Re-election:

The Vice-President is eligible for re-election any number of times.

Dr. S. Radhakrishnan and Mohammad Hamid Ansari each served two full terms.

Election:

  • He is elected by an electoral college consisting of all members of both Houses of Parliament, including nominated members.
  • The election is held by the single transferable vote and secret ballot.

Qualifications:

  • He must be a citizen of India and at least 35 years of age.
  • He must be qualified for election as a member of the Rajya Sabha.
  • He must not hold any office of profit.

Functions:

  • He is the ex officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
  • He acts as President when there is a vacancy in the office of President, for a maximum of six months, until a new President is elected.
  • He discharges the President's functions when the President is unable to do so because of absence or illness.

Vacancy:

If the office of Vice-President falls vacant before the end of the term, an election must be held as soon as possible, and the new Vice-President gets a full five-year term.

Comparison:

  • The President also has a five-year term.
  • Members of the Rajya Sabha have a six-year term.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗4 and 6 years and an age limit of 65 do not apply to the Vice-President.

Quick tip

Remember: Vice-President = 5-year term (Article 67); removed by an effective majority of the Rajya Sabha agreed to by the Lok Sabha.
