Bangladesh celebrates its Independence Day on:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — 26 March

Detailed Solution

Bangladesh celebrates its Independence Day ("Swadhinata Dibosh") every year on 26 March.

Why 26 March:

  • On the night of 25 March 1971, the Pakistan Army launched "Operation Searchlight", a brutal military crackdown in Dhaka and other parts of East Pakistan.
  • In the early hours of 26 March 1971, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the leader of the Awami League, declared the independence of Bangladesh before he was arrested by the Pakistan Army.
  • This marked the beginning of the Bangladesh Liberation War.

The Liberation War (1971):

  • Bengali freedom fighters ("Mukti Bahini") fought against the Pakistan Army.
  • About 10 million refugees fled to India.
  • India entered the war on 3 December 1971 after Pakistan launched air strikes on Indian airbases.

On 16 December 1971, about 93,000 Pakistani troops, led by Lt. Gen. A. A. K. Niazi, surrendered to the joint forces of India and Bangladesh, led by Lt. Gen. Jagjit Singh Aurora, in Dhaka. It was one of the largest military surrenders since World War II.

16 December is celebrated as "Victory Day" ("Bijoy Dibosh") in Bangladesh and "Vijay Diwas" in India.

The Shimla Agreement between India and Pakistan was signed in July 1972.

About Bangladesh:

Capital: Dhaka.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is called "Bangabandhu" ("Friend of Bengal") and is regarded as the Father of the Nation. He was assassinated on 15 August 1975.

Its national anthem, "Amar Sonar Bangla", was written by Rabindranath Tagore.

Other important days in Bangladesh:

  • International Mother Language Day: 21 February, in memory of students killed in Dhaka in 1952 during the Bengali Language Movement ("Ekushey February").
  • Pakistan's Independence Day: 14 August.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗16 December is Victory Day in Bangladesh.
  • ✗21 February is International Mother Language Day ("Ekushey").
  • ✗14 August is Pakistan's Independence Day.

Quick tip

Remember: Bangladesh Independence Day = 26 March (declaration 1971 after Operation Searchlight); Victory Day (Bijoy Dibosh)/India's Vijay Diwas = 16 December 1971; anthem "Amar Sonar Bangla" by Tagore.
