Answer: Option B — Axis Powers

Detailed Solution

Germany, Italy and Japan were the main members of the "Axis Powers" in the Second World War (1939-1945).

About the Axis Powers:

The term "Axis" was first used by the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini in November 1936, after Italy and Germany signed an agreement. He said that Europe would revolve around the "Rome-Berlin axis".

The "Anti-Comintern Pact" (1936) was signed between Germany and Japan against communism; Italy joined in 1937.

The "Pact of Steel" (May 1939) was a military alliance between Germany and Italy.

The "Tripartite Pact" was signed on 27 September 1940 in Berlin by Germany, Italy and Japan. It formally created the Axis alliance.

Other countries that joined the Axis included Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Slovakia, as well as some puppet states.

Leaders of the Axis:

  • Germany: Adolf Hitler (Nazi Party).
  • Italy: Benito Mussolini (Fascist Party).
  • Japan: Emperor Hirohito, with Prime Minister Hideki Tojo.

About the Allied Powers:

The main Allies were the United Kingdom (Winston Churchill), the Soviet Union (Joseph Stalin), the United States (Franklin D. Roosevelt, later Harry Truman), China and France.

India, as a British colony, contributed about 25 lakh soldiers, the largest volunteer army in history.

End of the war:

  • Italy surrendered in September 1943.
  • Germany surrendered on 7-8 May 1945 ("V-E Day", Victory in Europe).
  • After the USA dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima (6 August 1945) and Nagasaki (9 August 1945), Japan announced its surrender on 15 August 1945 and formally signed it on 2 September 1945 ("V-J Day").

Other alliances:

  • First World War (1914-1918): the "Central Powers" (Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria) fought against the "Allied Powers" or "Entente" (Britain, France, Russia, later Italy and the USA).
  • The "Triple Entente" (1907): Britain, France and Russia.
  • The "Triple Alliance" (1882): Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The Allied Powers fought against the Axis.
  • ✗The Central Powers fought in the First World War.
  • ✗The Triple Entente was a pre-First World War alliance of Britain, France and Russia.

Quick tip

Remember: Axis Powers (WWII) = Germany, Italy, Japan (term by Mussolini 1936; Tripartite Pact 1940); Allies = UK, USSR, USA, China, France; Central Powers = WWI (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria).
