Answer: Option D โ Afghani
Detailed Solution
The Afghan Afghani (code: AFN; symbol ุ) is the currency of Afghanistan.
About the Afghani:
- It was first introduced in 1925, replacing the Afghan rupee, during the reign of King Amanullah Khan.
- One Afghani is divided into 100 "puls".
- It is issued by "Da Afghanistan Bank", the central bank of Afghanistan, set up in 1939.
A new Afghani was introduced in 2002-03, after the fall of the first Taliban government. The old notes were exchanged at a rate of 1,000 old Afghanis to 1 new Afghani.
After the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, the country faced a severe economic crisis, as foreign aid was cut off and the central bank's foreign reserves (about 9 billion US dollars) were frozen abroad.
The Taliban government banned the use of foreign currencies (such as the US dollar and Pakistani rupee) in domestic transactions in 2021.
About Afghanistan's economy:
- It is largely based on agriculture, including wheat, fruits (pomegranates, grapes, apricots) and dry fruits (almonds, raisins, pistachios), which are exported to India.
- It has rich mineral deposits, including copper, iron ore, lithium and rare earths, which are largely undeveloped.
- It was the world's largest producer of illegal opium, but production fell sharply after the Taliban banned poppy cultivation in 2022.
India and Afghanistan:
- India has given more than 3 billion US dollars in development aid to Afghanistan since 2001.
- Trade between the two countries uses routes such as the "Air Freight Corridor" (2017) and the Chabahar port in Iran, since Pakistan restricts land transit.
- India sent wheat, medicines and COVID-19 vaccines as humanitarian aid after 2021.
Currencies of nearby countries:
- Iran: Iranian rial.
- Pakistan: Pakistani rupee.
- Tajikistan: Somoni.
- Uzbekistan: Som.
- Turkmenistan: Manat.
- India: Indian rupee.
Countries using the dinar:
Iraq, Kuwait, Jordan, Bahrain, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia and Serbia.
Why not the other options?
- โThe rial is the currency of Iran, Oman and Yemen (and the riyal of Saudi Arabia and Qatar).
- โThe rupee is used in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Mauritius.
- โThe dinar is used in Iraq, Kuwait, Jordan and other countries.
Quick tip
Remember: Afghanistan = currency Afghani (introduced 1925 by Amanullah Khan; new Afghani 2002; central bank = Da Afghanistan Bank); Iran = rial; Tajikistan = Somoni; Uzbekistan = Som; Turkmenistan = Manat.
