Answer: Option A — Ngultrum
Detailed Solution
The Ngultrum (currency code: BTN; symbol Nu.) is the official currency of Bhutan.
About the Ngultrum:
- It was introduced in 1974 by the government of Bhutan.
- One Ngultrum is divided into 100 "chhertum".
- The word "ngul" means silver and "trum" means coin.
- It is issued by the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan (RMA), the central bank of Bhutan, set up in 1982.
- It is pegged to the Indian rupee at par (1 Ngultrum = 1 Indian rupee).
- The Indian rupee is also accepted as legal tender in Bhutan, alongside the Ngultrum (though Indian notes of high denominations have had restrictions at times).
- Before the Ngultrum, the Indian rupee was widely used in Bhutan, and Bhutan also issued its own silver and copper coins.
About the economy of Bhutan:
- Its largest export is hydroelectric power, most of which is sold to India.
- Its other main sectors are agriculture, forestry, tourism and mining.
- It follows a "high value, low volume" tourism policy, charging visitors a "Sustainable Development Fee"; Indian tourists pay a lower fee.
- India is Bhutan's largest trading partner and development partner.
Currencies of India's neighbours:
- Nepal: Nepalese rupee (also pegged to the Indian rupee, at 1.6 Nepalese rupees = 1 Indian rupee).
- Bangladesh: Taka.
- Myanmar: Kyat.
- Sri Lanka: Sri Lankan rupee.
- Pakistan: Pakistani rupee.
- Maldives: Rufiyaa.
- China: Renminbi (Yuan).
Other facts:
The Indian rupee symbol (₹) was adopted in 2010; it was designed by D. Udaya Kumar.
India's UPI (Unified Payments Interface) payments are accepted in Bhutan (since 2021), Nepal, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, the UAE, Singapore, France and other countries.
Why not the other options?
- ✗The rupee is the currency of India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
- ✗The Taka is the currency of Bangladesh.
- ✗The Kyat is the currency of Myanmar.
Quick tip
Remember: Bhutan's currency = Ngultrum (1974; pegged 1:1 to the Indian rupee; issued by the Royal Monetary Authority); Bangladesh = Taka; Myanmar = Kyat; Maldives = Rufiyaa.
