Answer: Option C — Qing dynasty
Detailed Solution
The Qing dynasty (1644-1912) was the last imperial dynasty of China.
About the Qing dynasty:
- It was founded by the Manchus, a people from Manchuria in north-east China, who were not Han Chinese.
- The Manchus captured Beijing in 1644, replacing the Ming dynasty.
- Its rulers made Beijing their capital and lived in the Forbidden City.
It was one of the largest empires in Chinese history, reaching its greatest extent in the 18th century under the emperors Kangxi (1661-1722), Yongzheng and Qianlong (1735-1796). It included Mongolia, Tibet, Xinjiang and Taiwan.
Decline of the Qing:
- In the 19th century, it was weakened by corruption, rebellions and foreign pressure.
- The First Opium War (1839-1842) with Britain ended with the Treaty of Nanking, under which Hong Kong was ceded to Britain.
- The Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864) was one of the deadliest civil wars in history.
- The Second Opium War (1856-1860), the defeat by Japan in the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-95), and the Boxer Rebellion (1899-1901) further weakened it.
Fall of the Qing:
The "Xinhai Revolution" began with the Wuchang Uprising on 10 October 1911.
The Republic of China was proclaimed on 1 January 1912, with Dr. Sun Yat-sen as its provisional President. He is called the "Father of the Nation" in Taiwan and the "Forerunner of the Revolution" in mainland China.
The last emperor, Puyi, abdicated on 12 February 1912, at the age of six. This ended more than 2,000 years of imperial rule in China.
Puyi was later made the puppet ruler of "Manchukuo" by Japan (1932-1945). His life was shown in the film "The Last Emperor" (1987), which won nine Oscars.
Important Chinese dynasties:
- Qin (221-206 BCE): first unified empire.
- Han (206 BCE-220 CE): the Silk Road opened.
- Tang (618-907): a golden age of culture; the monk Xuanzang travelled to India during this period.
- Song (960-1279).
- Yuan (1271-1368): the Mongol dynasty founded by Kublai Khan.
- Ming (1368-1644): built the Forbidden City and much of the present Great Wall; Zheng He's voyages.
Later history:
The People's Republic of China was established by Mao Zedong on 1 October 1949.
Why not the other options?
- ✗The Ming dynasty ruled before the Qing, from 1368 to 1644.
- ✗The Han dynasty ruled in ancient times.
- ✗The Tang dynasty ruled from 618 to 907.
Quick tip
Remember: last imperial dynasty of China = Qing (Manchu, 1644-1912; last emperor Puyi abdicated 1912); Republic of China = 1912 (Sun Yat-sen); People's Republic = 1 October 1949 (Mao); Ming = 1368-1644.
