Answer: Option A — Alexander Kerensky
Detailed Solution
The Provisional Government of Russia, which was overthrown by the Bolsheviks in the October Revolution of 1917, was headed at that time by Alexander Kerensky.
The February Revolution (1917):
In February 1917 (March by the Western calendar), strikes, food riots and army mutinies broke out in Petrograd (St. Petersburg).
Tsar Nicholas II was forced to abdicate, ending the rule of the Romanov dynasty, which had lasted more than 300 years.
A Provisional Government was set up by members of the Duma (parliament), first under Prince Georgy Lvov.
At the same time, the Petrograd Soviet (council) of workers and soldiers was formed, which shared power with the government ("dual power").
Kerensky's government:
- Kerensky, a lawyer and a moderate socialist, was a member of both the Provisional Government and the Soviet.
- He became the Minister of Justice, then the Minister of War, and in July 1917 the head of the Provisional Government.
- His government continued to fight in the First World War, which was very unpopular.
- It delayed land reform and elections to a Constituent Assembly.
The October Revolution (1917):
- On 24-25 October 1917 (6-7 November by the Western calendar), the Bolsheviks seized power in Petrograd.
- The Military Revolutionary Committee, led by Leon Trotsky, organised the uprising.
- The Winter Palace, the seat of the Provisional Government, was captured.
- Kerensky escaped, and later lived in exile in France and the USA.
- He died in New York in 1970.
After the revolution:
- The Bolsheviks set up a Soviet government, and later renamed their party the Communist Party.
- Russia withdrew from the First World War by the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (March 1918).
- A civil war followed (1918-1921), between the Bolsheviks (Reds) and their opponents (Whites).
Why not the other options?
- ✗Nicholas II had already abdicated; Trotsky and Stalin were Bolshevik leaders.
Quick tip
Remember: Provisional Government (1917) overthrown by the Bolsheviks = headed by Alexander Kerensky; Tsar Nicholas II abdicated in February 1917.
