Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Peace in the Middle East

Detailed Solution

"Shuttle diplomacy" became famous through the efforts of US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who travelled repeatedly between Middle Eastern capitals in 1973 and 1974, after the Yom Kippur War, to negotiate agreements between Israel and its Arab neighbours.

Meaning of shuttle diplomacy:

  • It is a form of diplomacy in which a mediator travels back and forth between the parties to a conflict, who do not meet directly.
  • The mediator carries messages and proposals between them, to narrow their differences.

Kissinger's shuttle diplomacy:

  • After the 1973 war between Israel and Egypt and Syria, Kissinger travelled between Jerusalem, Cairo and Damascus.
  • He helped negotiate disengagement agreements between Israel and Egypt (1974) and Israel and Syria (1974).
  • These agreements separated the forces and reduced the risk of renewed fighting.

About Henry Kissinger:

  • He was the US National Security Adviser and later Secretary of State under Presidents Nixon and Ford.
  • He shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973 for negotiating the ceasefire in Vietnam.
  • He also played a key role in opening relations with China in 1971 and 1972.
  • He died in November 2023 at the age of 100.

Later Middle East peace efforts:

  • Camp David Accords (1978): between Egypt and Israel, mediated by US President Jimmy Carter.
  • Oslo Accords (1993): between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization.
  • Abraham Accords (2020): normalisation of relations between Israel and several Arab states.

Other examples of shuttle diplomacy:

The term is now used generally for any mediation in which a third party travels between the parties.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The end of the Vietnam War, German reunification and nuclear disarmament talks involved other forms of diplomacy.
