Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Bhutan

Detailed Solution

Paro is a historic town in the Paro Valley of western Bhutan and is one of the country's most popular tourist destinations.

About Paro:

It lies on the banks of the Paro Chhu (river), at a height of about 2,200 metres.

Paro International Airport, opened in 1983, is Bhutan's only international airport. It is considered one of the most difficult airports in the world to land at, because it is surrounded by high mountains; only a few specially trained pilots are certified to land there.

The national airline of Bhutan is "Druk Air" (Royal Bhutan Airlines).

Famous places in and near Paro:

Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery): a monastery built in 1692 on a cliff about 900 metres above the valley floor. Legend says Guru Padmasambhava flew there on the back of a tigress and meditated in a cave.

Rinpung Dzong ("Fortress on a Heap of Jewels"): a 17th-century fortress-monastery built by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal; it houses the district administration and monks.

Ta Dzong: a watchtower above Rinpung Dzong, now the National Museum of Bhutan (since 1968).

Kyichu Lhakhang: one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, believed to have been built in the 7th century by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo.

Drukgyel Dzong: a ruined fortress built in 1649 to celebrate victory over Tibetan invaders.

Festivals:

The "Paro Tshechu" is held every spring. On its last day, a giant "thangka" (religious painting) called a "thongdrel" is displayed at dawn.

Tshechus are festivals honouring Guru Rinpoche, with masked dances ("cham").

Other important places in Bhutan:

  • Thimphu: has the Tashichho Dzong and the Buddha Dordenma statue.
  • Punakha: the former capital; has the Punakha Dzong at the meeting of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.
  • Phuentsholing: a border town next to Jaigaon in West Bengal; the main trade gateway with India.
  • Bumthang: the spiritual heartland of Bhutan.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Nepal's main tourist towns include Kathmandu, Pokhara and Lumbini.
  • ✗Sikkim's main tourist places include Gangtok and Pelling.
  • ✗Tibet's main tourist places include Lhasa and Shigatse.

Quick tip

Remember: Paro = Bhutan (only international airport, opened 1983; Taktsang/Tiger's Nest; Rinpung Dzong; National Museum at Ta Dzong; Paro Tshechu); Punakha = former capital; Phuentsholing = border town.
