Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Nagaland

Detailed Solution

The Intanki National Park (also spelt Ntangki) is located in the Peren district of Nagaland, close to Dimapur.

About Intanki National Park:

  • It was first declared a reserved forest in 1923, then a wildlife sanctuary in 1975, and finally a national park in 1993.
  • It covers about 202 square kilometres.
  • It is the only national park in Nagaland.
  • It has tropical and subtropical evergreen and moist deciduous forests.
  • It is home to animals such as the hoolock gibbon (India's only ape), elephants, tigers, leopards, sloth bears, gaur, sambar, barking deer and many primates.
  • It is an important habitat for birds, such as the great Indian hornbill and the Kalij pheasant.

Its name comes from the Zeliang (Zeme) language. The area is traditionally associated with the Zeliangrong Naga people.

It has faced threats from poaching, illegal logging and encroachment.

Other protected areas of Nagaland:

  • Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary (Kiphire district).
  • Puliebadze Wildlife Sanctuary (near Kohima).
  • Rangapahar Wildlife Sanctuary (Dimapur).
  • Singphan Wildlife Sanctuary.

About Nagaland:

It became the 16th state of India on 1 December 1963. Its capital is Kohima.

It is known as the "Land of Festivals"; the Hornbill Festival is held every year from 1 to 10 December.

Its highest peak is Mount Saramati.

The Dzukou Valley, on the Nagaland-Manipur border, is famous for its seasonal flowers, including the Dzukou lily.

The Pangti village in Wokha district is known as the "Falcon Capital of the World", because huge flocks of migratory Amur falcons stop there every year. Local communities, who once hunted them, now protect them.

National parks of other north-eastern states:

  • Manipur: Keibul Lamjao National Park (the world's only floating national park) and Sirohi National Park.
  • Mizoram: Murlen and Phawngpui (Blue Mountain) national parks.
  • Tripura: Clouded Leopard National Park and Bison (Rajbari) National Park.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Manipur has the Keibul Lamjao National Park.
  • ✗Mizoram has the Murlen and Phawngpui national parks.
  • ✗Tripura has the Clouded Leopard and Bison national parks.

Quick tip

Remember: Intanki National Park = Peren district, Nagaland (national park 1993; only NP in Nagaland; hoolock gibbon); Pangti = "Falcon Capital of the World" (Amur falcons); Keibul Lamjao = Manipur (floating).

Biodiversity, National Parks & Wildlife — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Biodiversity, National Parks & Wildlife, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers biodiversity and its conservation: biodiversity hotspots, endangered and endemic species, the IUCN Red List, in-situ and ex-situ conservation, India's national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, tiger reserves and biosphere reserves, and wildlife conservation projects. Questions commonly ask in which state a national park is located and which animal it is known for (Kaziranga in Assam for the one-horned rhinoceros, and Gir in Gujarat for the Asiatic lion), when Project Tiger began (1973), and which regions of India are biodiversity hotspots. The number of protected areas changes as new ones are declared, so check the latest lists. Practise the biodiversity and conservation questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
