Answer: Option C — Assam
Detailed Solution
Kaziranga National Park is located in the Golaghat, Nagaon and Biswanath districts of Assam, on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra river.
About Kaziranga National Park:
- It is world-famous for having the largest population of the greater one-horned rhinoceros (Indian rhinoceros) in the world, about two-thirds of the global population.
- The 2022 census counted about 2,600 rhinos in the park.
Its history began in 1904-05, when Mary Curzon, the wife of the Viceroy Lord Curzon, visited the area and was disappointed not to see any rhinos. Her concern led to the creation of the Kaziranga Proposed Reserve Forest in 1905.
It became a game sanctuary in 1916, a wildlife sanctuary in 1950 and a national park in 1974.
It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 (along with Manas National Park in Assam).
It was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006 and has one of the highest densities of tigers in the world.
It is also home to the Asian elephant, the wild water buffalo, the eastern swamp deer and many birds. It is recognised as an Important Bird Area.
Its landscape includes tall "elephant grass", marshlands and tropical forests.
It is crossed by four main rivers, including the Brahmaputra, the Diphlu and the Mora Diphlu.
Every year, floods in the Brahmaputra submerge large parts of the park; animals move to higher ground, including artificial highlands built for them.
Other protected areas of Assam:
- Manas National Park: a UNESCO World Heritage Site and tiger reserve on the Bhutan border.
- Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary: has a very high density of one-horned rhinos.
- Orang National Park: called the "Mini Kaziranga".
- Dibru-Saikhowa National Park: known for feral horses.
- Nameri National Park.
Why not the other options?
- ✗West Bengal has the Jaldapara and Gorumara national parks, which also have rhinos.
- ✗Arunachal Pradesh has the Namdapha National Park.
- ✗Meghalaya has the Nokrek and Balphakram national parks.
Quick tip
Remember: Kaziranga = Assam (largest population of one-horned rhinos; national park 1974; UNESCO 1985; tiger reserve 2006); Orang = "Mini Kaziranga"; Manas = also UNESCO.

Biodiversity, National Parks & Wildlife — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Biodiversity, National Parks & Wildlife, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers biodiversity and its conservation: biodiversity hotspots, endangered and endemic species, the IUCN Red List, in-situ and ex-situ conservation, India's national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, tiger reserves and biosphere reserves, and wildlife conservation projects. Questions commonly ask in which state a national park is located and which animal it is known for (Kaziranga in Assam for the one-horned rhinoceros, and Gir in Gujarat for the Asiatic lion), when Project Tiger began (1973), and which regions of India are biodiversity hotspots. The number of protected areas changes as new ones are declared, so check the latest lists. Practise the biodiversity and conservation questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
