Answer: Option A — Haryana
Detailed Solution
The Sultanpur National Park is located in the Gurugram (Gurgaon) district of Haryana, about 50 km from Delhi.
About Sultanpur National Park:
- It is a small wetland park, covering about 1.4 square kilometres, built around a shallow lake ("jheel").
- It was declared a bird sanctuary in 1972 and upgraded to a national park in 1989.
The British ornithologist Peter Jackson, who was then in Delhi, and the Indian ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali helped to get it protected after recognising its importance for birds.
It is famous for the large number of resident and migratory birds that visit it, especially in winter.
Migratory birds arrive from places such as Siberia, Europe and Central Asia. They include the greater flamingo, northern pintail, common teal, ruff, Eurasian wigeon and bar-headed goose.
Resident birds include the sarus crane, painted stork, black-necked stork, spot-billed duck and Indian peafowl.
More than 250 species of birds have been recorded there.
In 2021, the Sultanpur National Park was designated a Ramsar site, along with the Bhindawas Wildlife Sanctuary (also in Haryana). They were Haryana's first Ramsar sites.
The "Salim Ali Interpretation Centre" at the park provides information about birds.
Other protected areas in Haryana:
- Kalesar National Park (Yamunanagar district).
- Bhindawas Wildlife Sanctuary (Jhajjar district).
- Morni Hills (Panchkula district), the highest point in Haryana.
Other bird sanctuaries in north India:
- Keoladeo National Park (Bharatpur, Rajasthan): a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1985) and one of India's first Ramsar sites (1981).
- Okhla Bird Sanctuary (Uttar Pradesh, near Delhi).
- Harike Wetland (Punjab): at the confluence of the Beas and Sutlej rivers.
- Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary (Uttar Pradesh).
Why not the other options?
- ✗Uttar Pradesh has the Okhla and Nawabganj bird sanctuaries.
- ✗Rajasthan has the Keoladeo National Park.
- ✗Punjab has the Harike Wetland.
Quick tip
Remember: Sultanpur National Park = Gurugram, Haryana (bird sanctuary 1972, national park 1989; Ramsar site 2021 with Bhindawas); Keoladeo = Bharatpur, Rajasthan; Harike = Punjab.

Biodiversity, National Parks & Wildlife — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Biodiversity, National Parks & Wildlife, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers biodiversity and its conservation: biodiversity hotspots, endangered and endemic species, the IUCN Red List, in-situ and ex-situ conservation, India's national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, tiger reserves and biosphere reserves, and wildlife conservation projects. Questions commonly ask in which state a national park is located and which animal it is known for (Kaziranga in Assam for the one-horned rhinoceros, and Gir in Gujarat for the Asiatic lion), when Project Tiger began (1973), and which regions of India are biodiversity hotspots. The number of protected areas changes as new ones are declared, so check the latest lists. Practise the biodiversity and conservation questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
