Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option D — Digital Saksharta Abhiyan
Detailed Solution
In PMGDISHA, "DISHA" stands for "Digital Saksharta Abhiyan" ("Digital Literacy Campaign"). The full name of the scheme is the "Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan".
About PMGDISHA:
- It was approved by the Union Cabinet in February 2017.
- It is run by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and implemented through "CSC e-Governance Services India Limited" (the Common Services Centres).
- Its target was to make 6 crore rural households digitally literate, by training one person from each eligible household.
It covers rural citizens aged 14 to 60 years. Priority is given to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Below Poverty Line families, women, persons with disabilities and minorities.
The training is for 20 hours, and is followed by an online examination and certificate.
Trainees learn to:
- Operate computers and digital devices, such as smartphones and tablets.
- Send and receive e-mails.
- Browse the internet and access government services online.
- Use digital payment methods, such as UPI, BHIM and Aadhaar-enabled payments.
- The target of training 6 crore people was achieved by 2024.
- It was described as one of the largest digital literacy programmes in the world.
Earlier programmes:
National Digital Literacy Mission (NDLM) and "Digital Saksharta Abhiyan" (DISHA), launched in 2014, which trained about 53 lakh people. PMGDISHA built on these.
About Digital India:
- "Digital India" was launched on 1 July 2015, with three vision areas: digital infrastructure as a utility for every citizen, governance and services on demand, and digital empowerment of citizens.
- Related initiatives: BharatNet, DigiLocker (2015), UMANG app (2017), Common Services Centres (CSCs) and the "India Stack" (Aadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker).
"DISHA" in other contexts:
"DISHA" is also the name of the "District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committees" (2016), chaired by the senior-most MP of each district, to monitor central schemes.
Why not the other options?
- ✗"Digital India Skill and Help Abhiyan" is not the correct expansion.
- ✗"Digital Infrastructure for Sustainable Habitat Abhiyan" is not the correct expansion.
- ✗"District Information System for Health Awareness" is not the correct expansion.
Quick tip
Remember: PMGDISHA = Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan (2017; MeitY; 6 crore rural people, one per household, aged 14-60; via CSCs); Digital India = 1 July 2015.
