Answer: Option B β 14 September
Detailed Solution
Hindi Diwas is observed every year on 14 September.
Why 14 September:
- On 14 September 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, as the official language of the Union.
- This decision is contained in Article 343 of the Constitution, which also says that the international form of Indian numerals shall be used for official purposes.
- The date also marks the birth anniversary of Beohar Rajendra Simha (born 14 September 1900), a scholar from Jabalpur who worked hard for Hindi to be accepted as the official language.
- The first Hindi Diwas was observed in 1953, on the recommendation of the Rashtrabhasha Prachar Samiti.
How it is observed:
- Government offices, schools and institutions organise essay and debate competitions, poetry recitations and other events to promote Hindi.
- The Rajbhasha Puraskar (Official Language Awards) are presented to ministries, departments and individuals for promoting Hindi in official work.
- The fortnight around it is observed as "Hindi Pakhwada".
Constitutional provisions on language:
- Part XVII of the Constitution (Articles 343 to 351) deals with official languages.
- Article 343: Hindi in Devanagari is the official language of the Union; English was to continue for 15 years (until 1965).
- The Official Languages Act, 1963 allowed English to continue to be used along with Hindi for official purposes.
- Article 351: directs the Union to promote the spread of Hindi.
- The Eighth Schedule now lists 22 languages.
π Remember
India has no "national language"; Hindi is an official language.Other language days:
World Hindi Day ("Vishwa Hindi Diwas"): 10 January. The first World Hindi Conference was held in Nagpur on 10 January 1975. It has been observed since 2006.
International Mother Language Day: 21 February (UNESCO, 1999), in memory of the Bengali language movement in Dhaka (1952).
Why not the other options?
- β10 January is World Hindi Day.
- β21 February is International Mother Language Day.
- β26 January is Republic Day.
