Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — 21 January

Detailed Solution

Tripura became a full-fledged state of India on 21 January 1972, and this day is celebrated as Tripura Statehood Day. Manipur and Meghalaya also became states on the same day.

History of Tripura:

Tripura was a princely state ruled by the Manikya dynasty for several centuries.

The last ruling king, Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, died in 1947. After his death, his widow, Maharani Kanchan Prabha Devi, acted as regent for the young king.

She signed the merger agreement with India on 9 September 1949, and Tripura was merged with India on 15 October 1949.

It became a "Part C" state in 1950 and a Union Territory in 1956, after the States Reorganisation Act.

It gained full statehood on 21 January 1972 under the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971.

About Tripura:

  • Capital: Agartala.
  • It is the third smallest state of India by area, after Goa and Sikkim.
  • It is surrounded on three sides (north, west and south) by Bangladesh, and is connected to the rest of India through Assam and Mizoram.
  • Its main languages are Bengali and Kokborok.
  • Famous places include the Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala (now the Tripura State Museum), the Neermahal water palace in Rudrasagar Lake, and the Tripura Sundari Temple at Udaipur (one of the 51 Shakti Peethas).
  • The Unakoti rock carvings are a famous archaeological site; they were added to UNESCO's Tentative List.
  • Tripura is known for its bamboo and cane handicrafts and for rubber plantations; it is India's second largest producer of natural rubber after Kerala.
  • The Maitri Setu bridge over the Feni river connects Tripura with Bangladesh (2021).

Other statehood days:

  • Nagaland: 1 December (1963).
  • Manipur and Meghalaya: 21 January (1972).
  • Sikkim: 16 May (1975).
  • Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram: 20 February (1987).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗1 December is Nagaland's statehood day.
  • ✗16 May is Sikkim's statehood day.
  • ✗20 February is the statehood day of Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram.
