Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option A — August
Detailed Solution
Hiroshima Day is observed on 6 August every year to remember the atomic bombing of the Japanese city of Hiroshima in 1945, during the final stage of the Second World War.
About the bombing of Hiroshima:
- On 6 August 1945, at 8:15 a.m. local time, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
- The bomb, code-named "Little Boy", was a uranium-235 bomb.
- It was dropped from a B-29 bomber called the "Enola Gay", piloted by Colonel Paul Tibbets.
- It was the first nuclear weapon ever used in war.
- About 70,000 to 80,000 people were killed immediately, and by the end of 1945, the death toll had risen to about 140,000 because of injuries and radiation sickness.
About the bombing of Nagasaki:
- Three days later, on 9 August 1945, a second atomic bomb, "Fat Man" (a plutonium bomb), was dropped on Nagasaki, killing about 70,000 people by the end of the year.
- Japan announced its surrender on 15 August 1945, and the formal surrender was signed on 2 September 1945, ending the Second World War.
Remembrance and peace:
- Hiroshima holds a Peace Memorial Ceremony every year on 6 August at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.
- The "Genbaku Dome" (A-Bomb Dome), a building that partly survived the blast, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1996).
- The story of Sadako Sasaki, a girl who folded paper cranes while dying of leukaemia caused by radiation, made the paper crane a symbol of peace.
- The survivors are called "hibakusha".
- The Japanese group of survivors, Nihon Hidankyo, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2024 for its efforts for a world free of nuclear weapons.
Other days in August:
- 9 August: Nagasaki Day; also Quit India Movement Day ("August Kranti", 1942).
- 12 August: International Youth Day.
- 15 August: Independence Day of India.
Why not the other options?
- ✗July has no connection with Hiroshima Day.
- ✗September is when Japan formally surrendered (2 September 1945).
- ✗December is not related.
Quick tip
Remember: Hiroshima Day = 6 August 1945 ("Little Boy", uranium, Enola Gay); Nagasaki Day = 9 August ("Fat Man", plutonium); Nihon Hidankyo won the Nobel Peace Prize 2024.
