World Environment Day is celebrated on:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — 5 June

Detailed Solution

World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated every year on 5 June. It is the United Nations' main day for encouraging awareness and action to protect the environment.

History:

The UN General Assembly established it in 1972, on the first day of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm, Sweden (5-16 June 1972).

The Stockholm Conference was the first major UN conference on environmental issues. It also led to the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya.

Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was the only head of government, other than the host's, to attend the Stockholm Conference. She famously asked whether poverty was not the greatest polluter.

World Environment Day was first celebrated on 5 June 1973, with the theme "Only One Earth".

How it is observed:

  • Each year, a different country hosts the official celebrations and a theme is chosen.
  • India hosted World Environment Day in 2011 (theme "Forests: Nature at Your Service") and 2018 (theme "Beat Plastic Pollution").
  • On World Environment Day 2018, India pledged to eliminate single-use plastic by 2022.
  • In 2021, the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030) was launched on World Environment Day.
  • In 2023, India launched "Mission LiFE" (Lifestyle for Environment) activities around the day; the mission itself was launched in October 2022.

Environmental laws in India:

  • Article 48A (Directive Principle) and Article 51A(g) (Fundamental Duty) on protection of the environment were added by the 42nd Amendment (1976).
  • Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

Other environmental days:

  • Earth Day: 22 April.
  • World Ozone Day: 16 September.
  • World Nature Conservation Day: 28 July.
  • World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought: 17 June.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗22 April is Earth Day.
  • ✗16 September is World Ozone Day.
  • ✗28 July is World Nature Conservation Day.

Quick tip

Remember: World Environment Day = 5 June (Stockholm Conference 1972; first observed 1973, "Only One Earth"; UNEP in Nairobi); India hosted in 2011 and 2018 ("Beat Plastic Pollution").
