International Women's Day is celebrated on:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — 8 March

Detailed Solution

International Women's Day is celebrated every year on 8 March to honour the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and to call for gender equality.

History:

  • In 1908, women garment workers marched in New York City demanding shorter working hours, better pay and the right to vote.
  • The Socialist Party of America organised a "National Woman's Day" in the USA on 28 February 1909.
  • In 1910, the German socialist Clara Zetkin proposed an international women's day at the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen, Denmark.
  • International Women's Day was first observed on 19 March 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.

On 8 March 1917 (23 February in the Russian calendar), women workers in Petrograd went on strike for "Bread and Peace". This helped start the Russian Revolution, and 8 March became the fixed date.

The United Nations began celebrating it in 1975, the International Women's Year.

In 1977, the UN General Assembly invited member states to proclaim a day for women's rights.

Each year has a theme; the UN theme for 2025 was "For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment."

In India:

  • National Women's Day: 13 February, the birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu, the "Nightingale of India" and the first woman Governor of an Indian state (Uttar Pradesh, 1947).
  • The Nari Shakti Puraskar is presented by the President of India on 8 March to women and institutions working for women's empowerment.

The Constitution (106th Amendment) Act, 2023 ("Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam") provides for one-third reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, to come into effect after the next census and delimitation.

Other related days:

  • International Day of the Girl Child: 11 October.
  • Women's Equality Day (USA): 26 August (19th Amendment gave American women the vote, 1920).
  • International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women: 25 November.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗13 February is National Women's Day in India.
  • ✗11 October is the International Day of the Girl Child.
  • ✗26 August is Women's Equality Day in the USA.

Quick tip

Remember: International Women's Day = 8 March (proposed by Clara Zetkin, 1910; UN since 1975; Nari Shakti Puraskar); National Women's Day (India) = 13 February (Sarojini Naidu).
