Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — 29 July

Detailed Solution

International Tiger Day, also called Global Tiger Day, is observed every year on 29 July to raise awareness about tiger conservation.

About International Tiger Day:

It was established at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia in 2010.

At this summit, the 13 tiger range countries adopted the "St. Petersburg Declaration" and set a goal called "TX2": to double the number of wild tigers by 2022 (the next Chinese Year of the Tiger).

In 2010, the global wild tiger population was estimated at only about 3,200.

About tigers in India:

  • India has about 75 per cent of the world's wild tigers.
  • According to the All India Tiger Estimation 2022 (released in 2023), India has at least 3,167 tigers (camera-trapped) and an estimated 3,682 on average.
  • India achieved the TX2 target of doubling its tiger population (from 1,411 in 2006 to 2,967 in 2018) four years before the 2022 deadline.
  • Madhya Pradesh has the largest number of tigers and is called the "Tiger State of India", followed by Karnataka and Uttarakhand.
  • The tiger (Panthera tigris) was declared India's national animal in 1973.

Project Tiger:

  • It was launched on 1 April 1973 at the Jim Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand, which was India's first national park (1936, as Hailey National Park).
  • It began with 9 tiger reserves; there are now more than 55.
  • The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) was set up in 2005-06 under an amendment to the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
  • The largest tiger reserve by area is Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam (Andhra Pradesh and Telangana).
  • In 2023, India launched the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) at the 50-year celebrations of Project Tiger in Mysuru.

Other wildlife days:

  • World Wildlife Day: 3 March (signing of CITES, 1973).
  • International Day for Biological Diversity: 22 May.
  • World Animal Day: 4 October.
  • World Elephant Day: 12 August.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗3 March is World Wildlife Day.
  • ✗22 May is the International Day for Biological Diversity.
  • ✗4 October is World Animal Day.

Quick tip

Remember: International Tiger Day = 29 July (St. Petersburg Summit 2010, TX2 goal); Project Tiger = 1 April 1973 (Jim Corbett); Madhya Pradesh = Tiger State; NTCA set up 2005-06.
