The International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists is observed on:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — 2 November

Detailed Solution

The International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists is observed every year on 2 November.

About the day:

It was established by the UN General Assembly in its resolution 68/163 of 18 December 2013.

The date 2 November was chosen to commemorate the killing of two French journalists, Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon of Radio France Internationale (RFI), who were abducted and killed in Kidal, Mali, on 2 November 2013.

It was first observed on 2 November 2014.

UNESCO leads the observance of the day.

Its purpose:

"Impunity" means that crimes go unpunished. According to UNESCO, in the large majority of cases of journalists killed around the world, the killers are never convicted.

The day calls on governments to investigate crimes against journalists, bring the guilty to justice and protect journalists.

It highlights threats faced by journalists, such as killings, kidnapping, harassment, imprisonment and online abuse, especially against women journalists.

Related UN initiatives:

UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity (2012).

UNESCO / Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize: awarded every year on World Press Freedom Day. It is named after Guillermo Cano Isaza, a Colombian journalist killed in 1986.

Other press-related days:

  • World Press Freedom Day: 3 May (UN, 1993); it marks the Windhoek Declaration of 1991.
  • National Press Day (India): 16 November.
  • Hindi Journalism Day: 30 May.
  • International Day for Universal Access to Information: 28 September.

Indexes:

  • The World Press Freedom Index is published every year by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), based in Paris.
  • The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), based in New York, also tracks attacks on journalists.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗3 May is World Press Freedom Day.
  • ✗16 November is National Press Day in India.
  • ✗10 December is Human Rights Day.

Quick tip

Remember: International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists = 2 November (UN 2013; killing of two RFI journalists in Mali); World Press Freedom Day = 3 May; Press Freedom Index = Reporters Without Borders.
