Answer: Option C — 25 January
Detailed Solution
National Voters' Day is celebrated in India every year on 25 January.
Why 25 January:
- The Election Commission of India (ECI) was established on 25 January 1950, one day before India became a republic.
- The day has been observed since 2011, the Election Commission's 61st foundation year.
Purpose of the day:
- To encourage more people, especially young people who have just turned 18, to enrol as voters.
- New voters are given their Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) at functions held across the country.
- To spread awareness about the importance of voting and electoral participation.
- Every year, a theme is chosen; the 2024 theme was "Nothing Like Voting, I Vote for Sure".
About the Election Commission of India:
- It is a constitutional body established under Article 324 of the Constitution.
- It conducts elections to the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha, the State Legislative Assemblies and Councils, and the offices of the President and Vice-President.
- (Elections to panchayats and municipalities are conducted by the State Election Commissions.)
It was a single-member body until 1989. Since 1993, it has been a multi-member body, with a Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and two Election Commissioners.
The first Chief Election Commissioner was Sukumar Sen.
The Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Act, 2023 now governs their appointment.
Voting age:
The 61st Constitutional Amendment Act, 1988 (effective 1989) lowered the voting age from 21 to 18 years.
Other related dates:
- 26 January: Republic Day (Constitution came into force, 1950).
- 24 January: National Girl Child Day.
- 26 November: Constitution Day ("Samvidhan Divas"), marking the adoption of the Constitution in 1949.
- International Day of Democracy: 15 September.
Why not the other options?
- ✗26 January is Republic Day.
- ✗24 January is National Girl Child Day.
- ✗26 November is Constitution Day.
