World AIDS Day is observed on:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — 1 December

Detailed Solution

World AIDS Day is observed every year on 1 December to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, to show support for people living with HIV and to remember those who have died of AIDS-related illnesses.

About World AIDS Day:

It was first observed on 1 December 1988. It was conceived in 1987 by James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter, two public information officers at the World Health Organization (WHO).

It was the first-ever global health day.

Since 1996, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has coordinated it.

The red ribbon is the international symbol of awareness and support for people living with HIV. It was created in 1991.

About HIV and AIDS:

  • HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) attacks the body's immune system, especially the CD4 cells (T-helper cells), which help the body fight infections.
  • If untreated, HIV can lead to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), the most advanced stage of the infection.
  • HIV spreads through unprotected sexual contact, sharing of needles and syringes, transfusion of infected blood, and from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding.
  • It does not spread through casual contact such as hugging, shaking hands, sharing food or mosquito bites.
  • There is no cure yet, but antiretroviral therapy (ART) can control the virus and allow people to live long, healthy lives.
  • The "95-95-95" UNAIDS targets aim for 95 per cent of people with HIV to know their status, 95 per cent of those diagnosed to receive treatment, and 95 per cent of those treated to have suppressed viral loads.

HIV/AIDS in India:

The first case of HIV in India was detected in 1986 in Chennai by Dr. Suniti Solomon and her student Sellappan Nirmala.

The National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) was set up in 1992 under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The HIV and AIDS (Prevention and Control) Act, 2017 prohibits discrimination against people living with HIV.

Other days on 1 December:

  • Border Security Force Raising Day (1965).
  • Nagaland Statehood Day (1963).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗24 March is World TB Day.
  • ✗7 April is World Health Day.
  • ✗25 April is World Malaria Day.

Quick tip

Remember: World AIDS Day = 1 December (since 1988; first global health day; red ribbon; UNAIDS since 1996); first HIV case in India = 1986, Chennai; NACO = 1992.
