Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — 14 December

Detailed Solution

National Energy Conservation Day is observed in India every year on 14 December.

About the day:

It has been observed since 1991. It is organised by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power.

Its aim is to raise awareness of the importance of energy efficiency and conservation, and of how to reduce energy consumption.

On this day, the Ministry of Power presents the "National Energy Conservation Awards" to industries, buildings, institutions and others for reducing energy consumption.

The week from 14 to 20 December is observed as "National Energy Conservation Week".

About the Bureau of Energy Efficiency:

It was set up on 1 March 2002 under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001.

It runs programmes such as:

"Star rating" (Standards and Labelling) for electrical appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators and fans, which tells consumers how energy-efficient an appliance is. More stars mean greater efficiency.

The Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC), 2007, for commercial buildings.

"Perform, Achieve and Trade" (PAT): a market-based scheme to improve energy efficiency in energy-intensive industries.

The Energy Conservation (Amendment) Act, 2022 introduced a "carbon credit trading scheme".

Other energy efficiency measures in India:

  • UJALA (Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All), launched in January 2015, distributed over 36 crore LED bulbs.
  • Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP), 2015.
  • These schemes are implemented by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture of public sector companies under the Ministry of Power.

Ways to save energy:

  • Switch off lights and appliances when not in use.
  • Use LED bulbs and star-rated appliances.
  • Use natural light and ventilation.
  • Use public transport, cycles or carpools.

Other related days:

  • National Technology Day: 11 May.
  • World Water Day: 22 March.
  • World AIDS Day: 1 December.
  • Earth Hour: last Saturday of March.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗11 May is National Technology Day.
  • ✗22 March is World Water Day.
  • ✗1 December is World AIDS Day.

Quick tip

Remember: National Energy Conservation Day = 14 December (since 1991; Bureau of Energy Efficiency, set up 2002 under the Energy Conservation Act 2001; star rating; UJALA LED scheme 2015).
