Answer: Option C — 3 June
Detailed Solution
World Bicycle Day is celebrated every year on 3 June.
About World Bicycle Day:
- The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution in April 2018 declaring 3 June as World Bicycle Day.
- The resolution was led by Turkmenistan and supported by many other countries.
- The idea was promoted by Professor Leszek Sibilski, a Polish-American sociologist, through a campaign.
- It was first celebrated on 3 June 2018.
Why the bicycle is important:
- The resolution recognises the "uniqueness, longevity and versatility" of the bicycle, which has been in use for about two centuries.
- It is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally friendly means of transport.
- It improves health and fitness, reducing the risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes and some cancers.
- It reduces traffic congestion, air pollution and fuel consumption.
- It helps people in rural areas reach schools, health centres and markets.
History of the bicycle:
The German inventor Karl von Drais built the "running machine" or "Laufmaschine" (also called the "draisine" or "dandy horse") in 1817. It had no pedals; riders pushed it with their feet.
Pedals attached to the front wheel appeared in France in the 1860s.
The "safety bicycle", with two equal-sized wheels and a chain drive, was developed by John Kemp Starley in England in 1885. It is the basis of the modern bicycle.
India and cycling:
India is one of the largest producers of bicycles in the world. Ludhiana in Punjab is a major centre of bicycle manufacturing.
The "Fit India Movement" (launched on 29 August 2019, National Sports Day) promotes cycling.
"Fit India Sundays on Cycle" is a cycling campaign started in December 2024.
The Smart Cities Mission ran the "Cycles4Change Challenge" (2020) to encourage cycling in cities.
