World Health Day is observed on:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — 7 April

Detailed Solution

World Health Day is observed every year on 7 April to mark the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) and to draw attention to an important global health issue.

About World Health Day:

  • The WHO Constitution came into force on 7 April 1948, which is regarded as the WHO's foundation day.
  • The First World Health Assembly in 1948 decided to observe 7 April as World Health Day from 1950.

Each year, WHO chooses a theme. For example, the 2025 theme, "Healthy beginnings, hopeful futures", focused on the health of mothers and newborns.

About the WHO:

  • It is a specialised agency of the United Nations responsible for international public health.
  • Its headquarters is in Geneva, Switzerland.

It has six regional offices. India is part of the South-East Asia Region (SEARO), whose office is in New Delhi.

Its constitution defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity".

Its achievements include leading the global campaign that eradicated smallpox, declared in 1980.

It publishes the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and the World Health Report.

It declared COVID-19 a pandemic on 11 March 2020.

Its Director-General since 2017 is Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus of Ethiopia.

The WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine was set up in Jamnagar, Gujarat (foundation stone laid in 2022).

India and health:

  • India was declared free of polio by WHO on 27 March 2014.
  • India was declared free of maternal and neonatal tetanus in 2015.

Other health days:

  • World AIDS Day: 1 December.
  • World TB Day: 24 March.
  • World No Tobacco Day: 31 May.
  • World Malaria Day: 25 April.
  • National Doctors' Day (India): 1 July.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗1 December is World AIDS Day.
  • ✗24 March is World TB Day.
  • ✗31 May is World No Tobacco Day.

Quick tip

Remember: World Health Day = 7 April (WHO founded 7 April 1948; first observed 1950); WHO HQ = Geneva; SEARO office = New Delhi; World TB Day = 24 March; World AIDS Day = 1 December.
