Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option B — 2 October
Detailed Solution
The International Day of Non-Violence is observed every year on 2 October, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who led India's freedom struggle through non-violence.
About the day:
- The UN General Assembly adopted resolution 61/271 on 15 June 2007 to establish the day.
- The resolution was introduced by India and co-sponsored by more than 140 countries.
- It was first observed on 2 October 2007.
- The resolution reaffirmed "the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence" and the desire to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence.
The idea was promoted at a conference on "Peace, Non-violence and Empowerment: Gandhian Philosophy in the 21st Century", held in New Delhi in January 2007 and inspired by the centenary of Gandhi's Satyagraha movement in South Africa (1906).
About Gandhi and non-violence:
- Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat.
- He developed the method of "Satyagraha" ("holding firmly to truth"), a form of non-violent resistance, first used in South Africa in 1906 against laws that discriminated against Indians.
- In India, he led movements such as Champaran (1917), Kheda (1918), the Non-Cooperation Movement (1920-22), the Salt March (Dandi March, 1930) and the Quit India Movement (1942).
- His ideas inspired leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. in the USA and Nelson Mandela in South Africa.
In India, 2 October is:
- Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday.
- The birth anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri, the second Prime Minister (born 1904).
- The launch date of the Swachh Bharat Mission (2014).
Other related days:
- Martyrs' Day: 30 January (Gandhi's assassination, 1948).
- International Day of Peace: 21 September.
- Human Rights Day: 10 December.
Why not the other options?
- ✗30 January is Martyrs' Day (Gandhi's death anniversary).
- ✗21 September is the International Day of Peace.
- ✗10 December is Human Rights Day.
Quick tip
Remember: International Day of Non-Violence = 2 October (Gandhi Jayanti; UN resolution 2007, moved by India); Martyrs' Day = 30 January; International Day of Peace = 21 September.
