World Wetlands Day is celebrated on:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — 2 February

Detailed Solution

World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on 2 February to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands for people and the planet.

Why 2 February:

On 2 February 1971, the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance was signed in the city of Ramsar, Iran. It is known as the "Ramsar Convention".

World Wetlands Day was first celebrated in 1997.

In August 2021, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution making it an official UN international day, first observed as such in 2022.

About the Ramsar Convention:

  • It is an intergovernmental treaty for the conservation and wise use of wetlands.
  • It came into force in 1975.
  • Wetlands that are designated under it are called "Ramsar sites", or Wetlands of International Importance.

The "Montreux Record" is a list of Ramsar sites where ecological changes have occurred or are likely to occur. In India, Keoladeo National Park (Rajasthan) and Loktak Lake (Manipur) are on it. Chilika Lake was on it but was removed in 2002.

What are wetlands:

  • They are areas where water covers the soil or is present near the surface for all or part of the year, such as marshes, swamps, lakes, mangroves, peatlands, rivers and coral reefs.
  • They purify water, control floods, store carbon, recharge groundwater and support rich biodiversity, especially migratory birds.

India and wetlands:

  • India joined the Ramsar Convention on 1 February 1982.
  • India's first Ramsar sites were Chilika Lake (Odisha) and Keoladeo National Park (Rajasthan), both designated in 1981.
  • India now has one of the largest networks of Ramsar sites in Asia, with more than 85 sites; Tamil Nadu has the most.
  • The largest Ramsar site in India is the Sundarbans Wetland (West Bengal).
  • India notified the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules in 2017.

Other related days:

  • World Water Day: 22 March.
  • International Day for Biological Diversity: 22 May.
  • World Environment Day: 5 June.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗22 March is World Water Day.
  • ✗22 May is the International Day for Biological Diversity.
  • ✗5 June is World Environment Day.

Quick tip

Remember: World Wetlands Day = 2 February (Ramsar Convention signed 2 February 1971 at Ramsar, Iran); India joined 1982; first Indian sites = Chilika and Keoladeo; largest = Sundarbans.
