Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — 28 May

Detailed Solution

World Hunger Day is observed every year on 28 May.

About World Hunger Day:

  • It was started in 2011 by The Hunger Project, a global non-profit organisation founded in 1977 that works to end hunger and poverty.
  • Its aim is to raise awareness about the hundreds of millions of people who suffer from chronic hunger and malnutrition, and to promote sustainable solutions.
  • It focuses on solutions led by communities, especially by women, who play a key role in food production and family nutrition.

The global hunger situation:

  • According to the UN's "State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World" (SOFI) reports, roughly 700 million people around the world face hunger.
  • Hunger is caused by poverty, conflict, climate change and extreme weather, economic shocks, inequality and food waste.
  • Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2), "Zero Hunger", aims to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030.

Measuring hunger:

  • The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is published each year by Concern Worldwide (Ireland) and Welthungerhilfe (Germany).
  • It uses four indicators: undernourishment, child stunting, child wasting and child mortality.
  • India's position in the GHI has been low, and the Government of India has questioned its methodology.

Food security in India:

  • The National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013 gives legal entitlement to subsidised food grains to up to 75 per cent of the rural and 50 per cent of the urban population.
  • Under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), free food grains are provided to about 80 crore beneficiaries; the scheme was extended for five years from 1 January 2024.
  • Other related schemes include PM POSHAN (mid-day meals in schools) and the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS).

Other related days:

  • World Food Day: 16 October (founding of the FAO, 1945).
  • World Food Safety Day: 7 June.
  • World Milk Day: 1 June.
  • Menstrual Hygiene Day is also observed on 28 May.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗16 October is World Food Day.
  • ✗7 June is World Food Safety Day.
  • ✗1 June is World Milk Day.

Quick tip

Remember: World Hunger Day = 28 May (The Hunger Project, since 2011); World Food Day = 16 October (FAO founded 1945); World Food Safety Day = 7 June; SDG 2 = Zero Hunger.
