Answer: Option D — Washington, D.C., USA
Detailed Solution
Both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have their headquarters in Washington, D.C., USA.
About their origin:
Both were created at the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference held at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, USA, in July 1944. They are therefore called the "Bretton Woods twins" or "Bretton Woods institutions".
India took part in the conference; the Indian delegation was led by Sir Jeremy Raisman, and included R. K. Shanmukham Chetty and C. D. Deshmukh.
Both came into existence in December 1945 and began operations in 1946-47.
India is a founding member of both.
About the IMF:
- It works to ensure the stability of the international monetary system.
- It monitors the economies of member countries, gives policy advice, and lends money to countries facing balance-of-payments problems.
- It created "Special Drawing Rights" (SDRs) in 1969, an international reserve asset.
- It publishes the "World Economic Outlook" and "Global Financial Stability Report".
Traditionally, its Managing Director is a European. Kristalina Georgieva (Bulgaria) has headed it since 2019.
Gita Gopinath was the IMF's first female Chief Economist (2019-2022) and later its First Deputy Managing Director.
About the World Bank:
- It consists of two institutions: the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD, 1944) and the International Development Association (IDA, 1960).
- Together with three other bodies (IFC, MIGA and ICSID), it forms the "World Bank Group".
- It provides loans and grants for development projects to reduce poverty.
Traditionally, its President is an American. Ajay Banga, an Indian-born American, has been President since June 2023.
It publishes the "World Development Report".
India is one of the largest borrowers from the World Bank.
Voting in both institutions is based on members' financial contributions (quotas or shares), so the USA has the largest voting share and an effective veto on major decisions.
Why not the other options?
- ✗New York has the UN headquarters.
- ✗Geneva has the WTO, WHO and ILO.
- ✗London has the headquarters of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
Quick tip
Remember: World Bank and IMF = Washington, D.C. (Bretton Woods twins, 1944; India a founding member); IMF head = Kristalina Georgieva; World Bank President = Ajay Banga (2023); WTO = Geneva.
