Answer: Option B — Parsis (Zoroastrians)
Detailed Solution
Fire temples are the places of worship of the Zoroastrians, known in India as Parsis.
About fire temples:
- Fire is considered a symbol of purity and of the divine light of "Ahura Mazda", the supreme god of Zoroastrianism.
- A sacred fire is kept burning continuously in the temple, tended by priests.
- Only Zoroastrians are usually allowed to enter the inner parts of fire temples.
Types of fire temples (by the grade of the fire):
- "Atash Behram" ("Fire of Victory"): the highest grade, consecrated with fires from 16 different sources, through elaborate rituals.
- "Atash Adaran": the second grade.
- "Atash Dadgah": the lowest grade, which can be kept in a home.
- A local fire temple is often called an "Agiary".
The Iranshah Atash Behram:
- It is located at Udvada, in the Valsad district of Gujarat.
- Its sacred fire is believed to have been burning continuously for more than 1,000 years, since it was consecrated by the Parsis who came to India.
- It is the most sacred place for Parsis in India.
- There are only eight or nine Atash Behrams in India, most of them in Mumbai and Gujarat.
About Zoroastrianism:
- It was founded by the prophet Zarathustra (Zoroaster) in ancient Iran (Persia).
- Its holy book is the "Avesta".
- It teaches the struggle between good (Ahura Mazda) and evil (Angra Mainyu), and stresses "good thoughts, good words, good deeds".
The Parsis in India:
- They came to India from Iran, fleeing religious persecution after the Arab conquest of Persia, and landed at Sanjan in Gujarat (around the 8th-10th century CE).
- The "Qissa-i-Sanjan" tells the story of their arrival.
- They have made great contributions to India; famous Parsis include Dadabhai Naoroji, Jamsetji Tata, Homi Bhabha and Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw.
- They are a notified minority community in India.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Jains worship in derasars and basadis.
- ✗Sikhs worship in gurdwaras.
- ✗Jews worship in synagogues.
Quick tip
Remember: fire temples (Agiary, Atash Behram) = Parsis; Iranshah Atash Behram = Udvada (Gujarat); Avesta = holy book; Parsis landed at Sanjan.
