Answer: Option C — 1984
Detailed Solution
The Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti (GSDS) was formed in September 1984, by merging the Gandhi Darshan and the Gandhi Smriti, with the Prime Minister of India as its Chairperson.
About the GSDS:
- It is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
- It is funded by the Government of India.
- Its aim is to propagate the life, mission and thought of Mahatma Gandhi through various programmes, exhibitions, publications and activities.
- It manages two campuses in New Delhi: Gandhi Smriti and Gandhi Darshan.
Gandhi Smriti:
- It is located at 5, Tees January Marg (formerly Albuquerque Road), New Delhi, in the former Birla House.
- Mahatma Gandhi lived here for the last 144 days of his life, from 9 September 1947 to 30 January 1948.
- He was assassinated here on 30 January 1948, while walking to his evening prayer meeting.
- A "Martyr's Column" marks the spot where he fell.
- The house was acquired by the Government of India in 1971 from the Birla family, and opened to the public as a national memorial on 15 August 1973.
- It contains the room where Gandhi lived, kept as it was, and exhibitions on his life.
Gandhi Darshan:
- It is located at Rajghat, New Delhi, near the samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi.
- It was set up in 1969, on the occasion of Gandhi's birth centenary, with an exhibition on his life and work.
Other Gandhi memorials:
- Rajghat: the samadhi (memorial) of Gandhi on the bank of the Yamuna, where he was cremated.
- The National Gandhi Museum, also at Rajghat.
Why not the other options?
- ✗1948 was the year of Gandhi's death.
- ✗1969 was the year Gandhi Darshan was set up.
- ✗1995 was not the year of the formation of the GSDS.
Quick tip
Remember: Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti = formed in September 1984 (Ministry of Culture; Prime Minister is Chairperson); Gandhi Smriti = former Birla House, Tees January Marg.
