Answer: Option C — New Delhi

Detailed Solution

The National Tribal Research Institute (NTRI) is located in New Delhi.

About the NTRI:

  • It was inaugurated on 7 June 2022 by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in the presence of the Minister of Tribal Affairs.
  • It is set up by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, in partnership with the Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA), New Delhi.
  • It is the apex national body for tribal research.

Its aims:

  • To serve as a national body for research, training and capacity building on tribal issues.
  • To coordinate and guide the work of the State Tribal Research Institutes (TRIs).
  • To promote and preserve tribal culture, heritage, languages and traditional knowledge.
  • To advise the government on tribal policies, based on evidence and research.
  • To support the monitoring and evaluation of tribal welfare schemes.

State Tribal Research Institutes:

There are about 27 TRIs in different states. The first ones were set up in the 1950s, such as at Ranchi (Bihar, now Jharkhand) in 1953 and Chhindwara (Madhya Pradesh) in 1954.

They study tribal communities, conduct research, run museums, and support state governments.

Odisha's SC and ST Research and Training Institute (SCSTRTI) in Bhubaneswar is one of the well-known TRIs.

About Scheduled Tribes in India:

  • According to the 2011 Census, Scheduled Tribes form about 8.6 per cent of India's population (about 10.4 crore people).
  • Madhya Pradesh has the largest ST population; Mizoram and Lakshadweep have the highest proportion.
  • There are 75 PVTGs, the most vulnerable tribal communities.
  • The Ministry of Tribal Affairs was created in October 1999.
  • Article 342 deals with the specification of Scheduled Tribes; the Fifth and Sixth Schedules deal with the administration of scheduled and tribal areas.

Tribal welfare initiatives:

  • "Janjatiya Gaurav Divas": 15 November, the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda (since 2021).
  • "PM JANMAN" (2023): for PVTGs.
  • "Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan" (2024).
  • "Tribal Freedom Fighters' Museums" are being set up in several states, such as the one at Ranchi.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Ranchi has one of the oldest state Tribal Research Institutes.
  • ✗Bhubaneswar has Odisha's SC and ST Research and Training Institute.
  • ✗Bhopal has the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya and a tribal museum.

Paintings, Crafts, Dress & Tribes — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Paintings, Crafts, Dress & Tribes, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's traditional painting styles (such as Madhubani, Warli, Pattachitra, Kalamkari, Gond and Tanjore), handicrafts and textiles, traditional dresses, and the major tribes of each state and their customs. It also includes Geographical Indication (GI) tags given to crafts and products. Questions usually ask which state a painting or craft belongs to, which tribe lives in a region, or what a traditional dress is called. Warli belongs to Maharashtra, Madhubani to Bihar, Pattachitra to Odisha and West Bengal, and Gond art to Madhya Pradesh. Grouping tribes by state, and noting the largest tribe of key states (such as the Bhils and the Santhals), helps with elimination. Practise the paintings, crafts and tribes questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT.
