Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Indulal Yagnik

Detailed Solution

The flag unfurled by Madame Bhikaiji Cama at Stuttgart in 1907 was later smuggled into British India by Indulal Yagnik, the nationalist leader from Gujarat.

The Stuttgart flag (1907):

  • On 22 August 1907, Madame Cama unfurled a flag of Indian independence at the International Socialist Congress at Stuttgart, in Germany.
  • It was one of the first times that a flag of India was hoisted on foreign soil.
  • She made a passionate speech, asking the delegates to support the freedom of India from British rule.

Design of the flag:

  • It had three horizontal bands: green at the top, saffron (or yellow) in the middle, and red at the bottom.
  • The green band had eight lotuses (or stars), representing the eight provinces of British India.
  • The middle band had the words "Vande Mataram" in Devanagari.
  • The red band had a sun on one side and a crescent moon on the other.

The design was prepared by Madame Cama, V. D. Savarkar and others.

The journey of the flag:

  • Indulal Yagnik brought the flag secretly to India.
  • It is now preserved at the Kesari Maratha Library (Tilak Museum) in Pune.

About Indulal Yagnik:

  • He was born on 22 February 1892 at Nadiad, in Gujarat.
  • He was a journalist, writer and political leader.
  • He worked with Gandhi in the Kheda Satyagraha (1918), and helped start "Navajivan" and "Young India".
  • He was a leader of the peasants of Gujarat, and founded the Gujarat Kisan Sabha.
  • After Independence, he was a leader of the movement for a separate state of Gujarat, and was known as "Indu Chacha".
  • He was elected to the Lok Sabha several times.
  • He wrote an autobiography in Gujarati, in six volumes.

Why not the other options?

Shyamji Krishna Varma, V. D. Savarkar and Lala Har Dayal were revolutionaries abroad, but they did not smuggle this flag into India.

Quick tip

Remember: Madame Cama's flag (Stuttgart, 22 August 1907) was smuggled into India by Indulal Yagnik; now at the Kesari Maratha Library, Pune.
